Random Quote

Scientific and technological progress themselves are value-neutral. They are just very good at doing what they do. If you want to do selfish, greedy, intolerant and violent things, scientific technology will provide you with by far the most efficient way of doing so. But if you want to do good, to solve the world's problems, to progress in the best value-laden sense, once again, there is no better means to those ends than the scientific way.

Happy B-day Patricia!!
Mine's in three days. I'm celebrating today so that I can recover in time for work on Monday. Let's see...41...I think that's the leather and lube birthday. Or is it retraints and hard tickles?
Just to be on the safe side, I'll do both.

Happy Birthday, Patricia!

Interesting (birthday/squid) facts:

-You have traveled 584,020,178 * years_old miles around the sun. (This does not include galactic orbit.)

-You have lived roughly 31,556,926 * years_old seconds.

-You weigh roughly (your_weight_lbs / 1,091 lbs)% of that of the largest recorded colossal squid (however, based on beak sizes found in whales, there are larger out there).

BTW, the conception of this body I'm now abusing (morbidly obese, high blood pressure, little exercise; healthy heart) occurred -near as I can figure- in late June of 1953. Anybody else out there figure out a near approximation of the most likely day for their conception?

I think I'd like a Happy Birthday wish!

I'm turning sixteen July 23rd, and it's my first birthday that I'll be celebrating. I have been raised as a Jehovah's Witness my entire life, and found secular humanism in the past year... it's really kind of exciting :D

I'm going to visit my non-Christian grandparents for three weeks (starting on the 12th), and my grandma's taking me to lunch with some of her awesome friends. There's a couple she's known for years who are very much ex-hippie types-- they believe in a lot of absolutely loopy stuff, like reincarnation and other such woo. They're also libertarians (yuck).

However, they do realize how ridiculous Christianity is and that makes them very good chatting buddies. They're very nice and I love them.

Not the "ideal" sweet sixteen, but I'm totally excited nonetheless. woot. :p

I think I'm going to get together with some of my old pals from elementary school (I lived in Cali until I was twelve) and we're gonna chill. During my deconversion process, I started to enjoy all kinds of stuff I longed to do but felt very guilty doing before-- such a relief. Being a conservative Christian is really not an easy task sometimes. :/

One thing is HARRY FREAKING POTTER! Ever since elementary school, I longed to read the books, go to the release parties and do all that nerdy stuff with my friends...

... AND NOW I CAN!! HPB is coming out July 15th, and I want to go to a midnight showing with my old school friends. One of them had an HP-themed room last time I heard, so there's a good chance that will actually materialize.

I have my HP/John Lennon glasses, striped sweater and 60GB iPod loaded with Wrock all set to go.

My grandma keeps the HP books I smuggle into the house a secret: I actually buy them while I'm in Cali and sneak them back up here, where I hide them in a Hello Kitty backpack in the closet. >:3

I'm missing two books, but I have all of them as PDFs on my compy, a few hard drives and my PSP memory sticks. I have a little bit of catching up to do, both with books and movies... but I think I can get it done.

Grandma had no objections to me seeing HBP-- her response was "your grandfather would love to go with you!"

I love Grandpa and all, but I want my first fangirl experience to be more, uh... "authentic," lmao. I hope I can organize an HP party with my friends. At worst, I'll be seeing a matinee with Grandpa. Better than nothing, though. :p

So yes!! Gonna be the best three weeks EVAR ;_;

Tommy Traddles @ 18:

How about George M. Cohan, Mitch Miller, Dear Abby, Gina Lollobrigida, the USA and Neil Simon

Are they Pharyngula regular commenters, hmmmm?

I've never seen a post from any of them, let alone comments as pithy as, and with the panache of, Patricia's.

I dunno about the others, but I strongly suspect that George M. Cohan has never even read this blog.

I don't know what I've done to deserve Sydow, but I'm not complaining. I'm old in as much as age is a state of mind, but my fartitude is all my own. (I see the dear Graf von Hubris has taken my suggestion to heart for some reason. - The more I think about it, the more I like it.)

Dear Pat, I send you birthday wishes.
Please will you let me wash your dishes,

And slowly lick and scrub your floors,
Wit’ my long tongue, whilst on all fours?

I’ll wear my finest leather thong,
(The one with Bible verses on)

And when I’ve finished doing that,
Please will you grease your longest cat,

And flog me while I count to ten,
With regular pauses, now and then,

To praise the Lord who made us all,
Just so that we could sin and fall,

And fornicate one with another,
And do it with our best friend’s mother.

And when you’ve made me howl and blubber,
Please also deal to fat Floyd Rubber.
***

Happy birthday Dearest Patricia, I’m so sorry that you will burn in hell for eternity after you die but I hope it won't ruin your day,

Your Godly Christian whipping buddy,

Smoggy Batzrubble

Happy Belated to Patricia, and to the others who've declared their natal day in this thread!

I'm reminded of my college days: I was in the Cougar marching band at U. of Houston (directed by the great Bill Moffit), and our tradition was to regale celebrating members with a... shall we say dystopian... birthday song, to the tune of Volga Boatmen:

O, happy birrrrrrth day,
O, happy birrrrrrth day;
Sin and sorrow fill the air,
People dying everywherrrrrrrrrrre;
O, happy birrrrrrth day.

A fairly sophomoric bit of doggerel, I guess, but the experience of hearing it mournfully chanted by ~200 people, about two-thirds of whom were music majors, was not to be missed.
