That's not a picture of cuttlefish snogging, that's Jar-jar Binks! Gee, there's never a sith around when you need one.

I just love seeing fledgeling Cthulhu's make love! Thanks PZ :)

Anyone else reminded of Bill Plympton's How to Kiss?

What's with the creationist advertising on here?

#7

#3: As previously remarked, awesome poll!

And some interesting results too...

@Kel: sci blogs has changed their ad provider lots of inappropriate ads appearing allover the place including creationists here, medical quackery for PalMD and Orac, and mail order brides on the pro-feminist blogs. Quite a few of the bloggers are up in arms, Isis has gone so far as to stop posting until the situation is resolved. PZ might not of spotted it yet as he's away in germany at the moment.

Back on topic, are they kissing or trying to kill each other? Either way that is an awesome pic!

#13

Here I was thinking it was a scam to take money from creationist organisations... :P

#14

Posted by: Ajita | July 3, 2009 8:58 AM

Yeah what is it exactly they're doing? It's not friendly behavior, I suppose...

#15

Posted by: Ajita | July 3, 2009 9:06 AM

@Kel and Ramel: There's no reason to get so upset. Remember, when creationist ads are on free-thought sites their organizations are losing money and not getting any incoming business. They're like money falling out through the holes of creationists' pockets. I make it a point to click on every creationist/religious ad, every time I see one. 'Click' thats a dime from the creationists' pockets that won't go towards hooking some innocent victim somewhere.

i was just reading this story:

"survivor still haunted by 1971 air crash"

the survivor is now a librarian in munich. look at the graphic in the background of the contemporary photo of her. look familiar?

What's with the creationist advertising on here?

Flash-, and adblock seem to be shielding me from that experience. For which Im grateful.
But if SB do this on purpose,or for ad revenue reasons,I'd be happy to tell them what I think about it.

I thought you said the Trophy Wife(tm) didn't like getting featured on here?

I'm not much for PDAs, but I have to admit it's kind of cute that you can still do that at your age.

#3: some interesting numbers at that poll. Currently, the most godless is Oceania, with 69% in the 'no' camp. That'll be why we've always been at war with them, I expect.

#22

Posted by: daveau Author Profile Page | July 3, 2009 10:19 AM

Moggie- I thought we have always been at war with Eastasia.

In matters semi-unrelated, an allusion to giant electrified squid clanks in today's Girl Genius.

#25

Posted by: Moggie | July 3, 2009 11:01 AM

#22, depends who "we" are, doesn't it? You've read the story from the point of view of Oceania, but the three blocs were essentially alike, and the whole thing could easily have been written from the perspectives of Neo-Bolshevism or Death Worship without too many changes.

aaargh,
amazing article about what happened to that woman. It must be utterly incomprehensible to many readers that she would not praise the jebus that she survived and her family died horribly.
'What's she doing? Is that... is she thinking about how she could have survived? She doesn't know that this certainly means she has a higher purpose in life, which is usually the explanation for why hundreds die horribly, that's how loving God is? She's not supposed to go all rational. It's just not right.'

Ok look at the picture again, only this time when you do say "OM NOM NOM NOM" aloud to yourself.

#31

Posted by: daveau Author Profile Page | July 3, 2009 11:23 AM

the three blocs were essentially alike

And interdependent.

So, Tom, how long have you known our "Chubby"?

#32

Posted by: aarrgghh | July 3, 2009 11:26 AM

felix @ 26:

yes, like you i was quite pleased to not hear another obligatory "praise be to jebus!" commercial in that piece. how rare. except for the narrator's gratuitous use of "miraculous", neither the victim nor the reporter go there. so who gets all the praise? her dad's survival tips.

"praise be to reason!"

@#3: Yes, cool poll.

I have to wonder whether the wealth of a nation breeds atheism, or whether the atheism of a nation breeds wealth.

The predominantly religious nations all seem to be the poorer ones.

If only the yes/no poll could be relied on for anything. Having the US at 47/53 is suspicious. I note the Canadian tail does not wag the US dog very much, even though our participation is much higher than the population ratio.

Then there's the major fail of not including Mexico in North America. Which part of América del Norte do people not understand?

#38

Posted by: Bert | July 3, 2009 1:51 PM

Heh, Vatican City State is at 50/50 on that poll.

Completely off topic (like that never happens here) but Sarah Palin just announced that she will step down as the governor of Alaska effective July 25. Apparently to focus on a run at the GOP nomination for 2012. It is currently up at Daily Kos. No, I am not kidding.

This picture reminds me of the time the cuttlefish were mating at the aquarium I worked at. After 3 days, the aquarist decided something was very wrong, and separated them to find that the male had eaten half the female's face.

Just sharing...
