Look what came in the mail today:

It's an iPod Touch from Eric Hovind! It's impossible to read in this photo, but it has a nice engraving on the back: the Creation Minute logo, and this message.
To PZ Myers
In hopes that your quest for TRUTH will end with God.

Isn't that nice? I'd been hoping they'd add some little distinguishing touch like that to it — it makes for a splendid victory trophy.

Well that was awfully nice of them! They held a contest, made it relatively simple for you to win, and even customized it a bit. I mean, it's still a functional iPod Touch, after all.
Now, do you plan to keep it, or auction it off for a genuinely educational cause? For what you'd get you may be able to buy 2 of the same model AND make a nice donation ;)

I despise basically everything that Hovind and CSE stand for, but I can't say they cheated in their own contest or that they are insincere in their beliefs. Hats off to them for following through with their promise, then immediately back on for all the other BS.

You may want to keep those Hovind lectures around for when you give talks to skeptics' groups: play a five-minute segment and see how many logical fallacies they can find.
Actually, I think that'd be more of a test of how quickly the audience can remember and write down the names of fallacies, but it could still be fun.

And putting that customized slap-in-the-face on the back was just their own personal disrespectful intolerance. It reeks of only doing it because they thought their god wanted them to, and in the hopes that they can "change" PZ.

If you're looking for things to do with your new toy, I highly recommend the application "Papers" by Mekentosj.
http://mekentosj.com/papers/iphone/
It lets you carry around PDF research articles with you, for reading on planes, or looking up a figure that came up while you were talking about at a conference, and so on. If you have wireless internet access, you can even search databases and download PDFs right to your iPod.

You'll want the following free apps.
Remote (control your Itunes library on your computer by wifi)
Skype - Turns your Ipod into a wifi phone (requires headphone/mic combo option)
Weather Channel has a nice app that beats the one standard on the Ipod.
Huffington Post and NYTimes apps.
Twitter.
Enjoy.

Congrats, PZ!
It looks nice indeed!

You should post the videos somewhere where everyone can see.
We need to show them we're not afraid of being suddenly converted to creationists by these silly videos.
Of course you can also post video or text debunking the Hovind stuff in the same place.
Make sure you don't violate copyright. They got testy with some debunkers on Youtube that included clips from Hovind videos.

Hope you enjoy it.
Now keep in mind that while the search for truth may lead to God, it doesn't necessarily mean Hovind's idea of God. More often than we think the destination turns out to be something unexpected.
Along with the other song suggestions I have a couple of my own:
Legend of a Mind The Moody Blues (aka "Timothy Leary")
Don Quixote Gordon Lightfoot
A post or two on what comes up during random play would be nice BTW.

Wow, Hovind ponied up. I thought he'd make an excuse to bail out when he discovered that all his iPods had been won by atheists.
Oh, and that little extra trophy for you to display, PZ, once again constitutes win for the reality defenders.
Posted by: Metatwaddle | July 8, 2009 9:00 PM
That's... surprisingly gracious of Eric Hovind, actually.

Here's what I think. You won with a cheap trick. Anybody who happens to have the most widely read science blog on the planet could have done the win-by-click thing.
If it had been an essay contest, you would not have won. You would not have won even if you'd written the best essay you've ever written on this site, which is this one:
http://tinyurl.com/5nukn5
And I sincerely mean that. The part about it being the best essay and the part about not likely to win a contest by K.H.
Posted by: llewelly | July 8, 2009 9:42 PM
Go back and read the threads. Nearly everyone expected Eric Hovind to disqualify PZ on some flimsy prerequisite. Creationists have set the bar for honesty pretty low.Posted by: Scooty Puff Jr. | July 8, 2009 9:42 PM
OK, so here's what you do: plug in the iPod touch, wait for iTunes to open, select it in the Devices list, then click Restore. iTunes will kindly wipe every trace of the creationist filth off your lovely new iPod. Except, of course, for the engraving. You're stuck with that. Sorry.
It's got to pain Steve Jobs to know that his devices are sometimes used by likes of a Hovind or a Limbaugh for such outright batshittery.
Posted by: llewelly | July 8, 2009 9:45 PM
One reason for PZ entering the contest was prove it was vulnerable to cheap tricks. (Although it's arguably more important that the victory can be used to mock creationism, and that it keeps an ipod touch full of dangerous delusions away from the vulnerable.)

Skeptic Zone

Freethought Radio
Sciam Podcast
Nature Podcast
And heck, just throw in stuff like Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me for fun.

I'm impressed that he actually made good on the iPod challenge. I seriously expected him to issue some kind of rant about how the atheists cheated due to their lack of morality, and award the prize to someone else... someone who couldn't be easily contacted for verification of prize receipt.
Posted by: Jeff S | July 8, 2009 11:57 PM
The engraving is pretty cool.
I think its funny that everyone is so used to creationists lying they are shocked they would follow through with the contest. PZ did exactely what they wanted. Its not like he cheated.

OT, but Greg Laden's link reminds me that we are coming up on the first anniversary of the conclusion of Crackergate (July 24th). Are you going to have a party, PZ?
Oh, and Greg, sour grapes make bitter wine.
Posted by: Andrew | July 9, 2009 12:40 AM
Congradulations, PZ, with the cost of having to erase Hovindganda and having to read about "the truth in God" on the back or your iG...sorry iPod. Hmm, how much would it cost to re-grave the back of your iPod as opposed to buying one? xD

161 - 'Hope that your quest for truth ends in GOD[LESS appreciation of the EVIDENCE]'
It's TRUTH. TRUTH has nothing to do with truth. TRUTH means mistrusting and even hating truth. TRUTH means enhancing, hiding, or obliterating truth when truth appears to threaten TRUTH. TRUTH can be supported and glorified by fabrication and false evidence whereby truth is made untrue. In TRUTH Theory a truth-lie can be true and virtuous and is to be sought after. In the truth worldview, however, one seeks to identify truth-lies as detrimental. TRUTH is constrained only by imagination and the Bible. Truth has many constraints.

Yes, in spite of the fact that Kent Hovind himself proudly declares they are "not copyrighted" and encourages people to "get this stuff and spread it around". In fact, I would guess the Kent Hovind videos on PZ's prize are the same ones that have already been thoroughly eviscerated by a couple of students on YouTube - search for "ExtantDodo" and you'll find them. Even if they're not the exact same recordings, you can bet the same tired old points will be brought up in them anyway,
Posted by: Muffin | July 9, 2009 5:15 AM
"In hopes that your quest for TRUTH will end with God."
Oh, sure, can do: "there is no God." See? It's the truth, and it ends with God. That was easy.
Posted by: Chris | July 9, 2009 5:36 AM
Well done PZ. As for all the suggestions as to what PZ should do with it now, like auction it off for charity or put it up for grabs on this site, why don't we let PZ decide what to do with it. Like keep it and use it perhaps?
Posted by: Flea | July 9, 2009 5:44 AM
This gadget can't sit on your shelf alone PZ. You should start a post asking for ideas to give this lovely present a bright, scientific and atheistic future.

Oh, isn't that sweet - what a nice way to say "I hope you burn in hell".
The iPod deserves a small glass trophy case for those times it's more appropriate to display than to wear.
I hope you wrote to thank him for the iPod. :) God works in mysterious ways ...
AAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Yeah, gonna have to agree with what the others have been saying, it's pretty good of them to fulfill their end of the deal. They might make a big deal out of it on their website later and take the moral high ground or something, but still.
Posted by: RickWeimer | July 9, 2009 7:07 AM
Just in case, I would erase it's flash memory at least 5 times before doing anything else - It might be infected...
Posted by: Gordy | July 9, 2009 7:13 AM
I love the way they've put "truth" in block capitals :) It's such an instantly recognisable style...
Still, props to them for being honest enough to send it. Makes my clicking seem worthwhile, which is more than their videos did.

I can't help but notice the classy caps lock. Cruise control for truth, now, apparently.
Anyway, congrats on your new thingamajig. What will you fill it with?
Posted by: teresa | July 9, 2009 9:51 AM
PZ,as someone suggested above, you could make a lot of money for a good science cause if you auctioned it off, but I would suggeste that you leave the creationist crap on there, and then record a rebuttal from yourself, and maybe a few more from some of your fairly famous rational friends before you do. It will increase the value of the product.

I disagree.
For people who believe in honesty and small-t truth as it was described earlier in this thread, it would simply be a duty to live up to one's word.
Since the Hovinds are purveyors of dishonesty and superstition, it is merely surprising that they made good on their word. It is not "pretty good" when someone lives up to their word, it is simply what should be expected.
That they can do this perhaps raises them one rung out of a pool of slime.

Can you imagine how frustrating that would be to run this traffic drive to help spread your beliefs only to find it jammed by some evolutionist punk? I agree that we should expect them to send the itouch, but I'm personally really impressed that the inscription was so respectful. PZ keeps calling it a trophy... what does it represent, other than our ability to spite Hovind and co.? I think they won this one.
