Tom Paulson gets the student perspective on Lindau. He got a quote from me, too, although I think the words of Peter Agre will have more weight.
I really can't emphasize this enough: this meeting was a phenomenal experience for students.

… believing in a God whom we cannot but regard as evil, and then, in mere terrified flattery calling Him 'good' and worshipping him is a still greater danger… The ultimate question is whether the doctrine of the goodness of God or that of the inerrancy of scripture is to prevail when they conflict. I think the doctrine of the goodness of God is the more certain of the two. Indeed, only that doctrine renders this worship of Him obligatory or even permissable.

I read the article that PZ linked and was discouraged by a couple of the comments:
The next comment by DebbieJay read in part:
The guy who made the "Darwinian theory" comment came back with:
Seems like DebbieJay was right.

I'd really like to go to something like that. Working together towards furthering our understand of the world is when humanity is at it's best.

For some reason, it seems that newspaper comment threads attract the lowest of the low... I am trying to train myself not to read them, because they just make me feel depressed and angry at the same time. I have neither the time nor energy to deal with all the siwoti flare-ups that occur following a foray into newspaper commenting...

I went back in my grad student days, and PZ is right...it was a phenomenal experience. The DOE was the organization that sponsored most of the American students who went; if you want to support it, write to the usual suspects.
