Random Quote

Once the sin against God was the greatest sin; but God died, and these sinners died with him. To sin against the earth is now the most dreadful thing, and to esteem the entrails of the unknowable higher than the meaning of the earth.

[Zarathustra, in Friedrich Nietzsche's "Thus Spoke Zarathustra", First Part]

If that's supposed to be you PZ they haven't drawn the horns in too clearly...also you've become rather follicularly challenged all of a sudden.

They might actually learn something. :-)

Yes, this is perfect. Bring real education into the churches. Good plan. It's far better than showing Expelled to every Baptist congregation.

I think it's Larry Moran.

I just choked a little. I declare myself to be greatly amused by the comic.

What? I thought that this was happening in most churches every Sunday, and that only evolutionists were unwilling to question their basic beliefs.

You mean to tell me that the evidence in favor of evolution isn't allowed into many churches? Will we have to make an Expelled-type movie to expose this fact?

I would share this with my friends, but they know me to be very picky about spelling and grammar. Perhaps we could convince the artist to draw it again with the r in universe?

You're all forgetting the most overlooked bit of error here. The biologist MUST have his hat! The one with the tentacles! If the clergy get their costuming then it helps if our side gets a little pomp too.

#8: "well, either they'll learn something, or they'll run away screaming and never come back to church."

Actually, from my personal experience sitting through church services as a child, most people would sleep through the physics/chemistry/biology/[insert scientific field] lecture, the same way they sleep through the sermons now.

To this day, I can't recall anything that was actually said in any sermons I ever heard. And the vast majority of the people I could see were either dozing off, or obviously thinking about something else.

Yeah, everyone forgets the cockatrices and whatnot. You know, someone could do an Chick-tract-style comic showing the Bible as a cracked up Gygaxian Dungeons & Dragons campaign.

The jerk DM certain instakills a whole mess of israerlites, Tomb of Horrors-style.

The lac operon makes infinitely more sense to me than any religious mumbo jumbo. I guess it helps that I've learned it in about 6 of my undergraduate biology classes. Woo.

Did you learn that cAMP has a critical role in the regulation of the lac operon, Mr. Expert?

Hey, if we peer reviewed the Bible, could we maybe get a mention in the final draft?

"In the beginning, something may or may not have happened, with or without the help of an intervening deity. Our data thus far is inconclusive, but no evidence has appeared indicating a deity exists. Still, a lot of people seem to believe in one for some reason. Here are some stories about some of these believers."

well, either they'll learn something, or they'll run away screaming and never come back to church. it' a win-win.

No, this is the USA. They'd just pull out their guns, blast away, and the survivors would claim they killed a demon or commie or atheist or rat or somesuch. Wouldn't even go to trial, especially if any of the shooters was a cop.

Faux News would hail them as heros. Their representatives in Congress, perhaps especially if the Thug Party, would try to award them the Freedom Medal. The soon-to-be-ex-Governor of Alaska would claim its the first step of her new style politics. Anyone foolish enought to protest would be Tasered. Any deaths would be a priori accidental, despite having to be Tasered teentytwo times.

Just imagine a peer-reviewed, scientifically accurate version of the bible (or even just Genesis)...

"And the lord thy god said, 'Let there be light,' and from a single point time and space expanded in an instant, and hydrogen and helium fused together, and the stars were born..."

And so on.

I am aware that this isn't particularly related to the topic at hand, but I can use my email at work to send this in, and I thought you lot might like to know. There's an interesting (and by interesting I mean "bad") article in today's HuffPo about the "New Atheists." The premise is that New Atheists are generally right-wingers when it comes to foreign policy... except the author never really goes into any kind of proof for that statement, but instead just sort of launches into an argument that maybe the New Atheists are wrong about religion being evil. Which isn't what the article told us it would be about at all.

It's worth noting that the guy is also selling a book which he pitches mid-article, called "The Evolution of God," so you can see where this is going.

I think what I wrote above just looks odd now as i didn't intend for the conversation to end there. I really saw it playing out something like

I guess it helps that I've learned it in about 6 of my undergraduate biology classes

Did you learn that cAMP has a critical role in the regulation of the lac operon, Mr. Expert?

Well yeah, everyone knows that

That's all well and good, except for one little detail...it doesn't!

*GASP!*

Indeed

but..but..the textbooks

Are wrong

My whole life...has

Been a lie

You must be some sort of genius

Close. I'm a microbiologist. It's like a genius, but with one difference.

What's that?

We don't play by the rules.

Can I kiss you?

(Sex scene censored)

Thanks baby, you were great, but now I'm off, to save the universe

I'll always love you

Yeah, great. Whatever.

Mea culpa on the misspelling of "universe". I'm blaming it on the cats.

In my defense, Google reports 178,000 incidents of "univese", including the 1008 Miss Univese competition on youtube:
