A conservative pundit, lying about an issue that demands action by a strong centralized government. What a surprise.

One State! One Country! One Chief! Franco! Franco! Franco!

I wish George Will would stick to baseball. At least he's marginally knowledgeable there.

Global warming deniers should get in the feckin' sack with the homeopathists, psychics, astrologers and priests...

In other news, Joseph Ratzinger describes himself as "a lifelong Catholic".

Also, bears defecate in forested areas.

It is (was) "Generalísimo" Franco. His tomb has a stone plaque weighting 3 ton, in case he tries to wake up. That should be tried with global warming denialism.

He's always been good on evolution, so why he's such a crank on global warming seems on the surface to be an incongruity.

I think, though, that it's explainable by the fact that rich friends of his, and perhaps his own portfolio, might "suffer" (lose a bit of money that could be had from trashing the planet, IOW) if something is done.

Deny the science that might cost you, seems to be the rule.

Also, Generalissimo Francisco Franco is still dead.

Are you sure? Have you seen his long-form death certificate? Huh? Huh?!

Oh, and some wall or other in Berlin has fallen over as well, apparently.

Have you seen one of the "Torrente" movies by any chance?

Because that's almost the only place where yhou can see mentions of the old dictator nowadays.

I migrated to Spain shortly before his (extra long and delayed) demise and it was the best decision of my life. Watching the old regime loosing it while the country was waking up and emerging into the present was something I would hate to have missed. And seeing the state church losing its privileges and influences little by little was even more enjoyable :-)

What if the action in question happened to be "invading a country with lots of oil under its people's feet"?

Oh, right. They'd lie about that too.

George Will. Won't. Can't. Typical conservative. He lies then ignore the responses. He is a pissant.

It's very discouraging seing people defending things they do not want to understand and applying simply the catchwords of their political tendency. That applies, of course, both to liberals and conservatives, libertarians and collectivists. Of course, there are independent-minded conservatives, liberals, libertarians or collectivists that try to read, to learn, to study, before making any statement. On the contrary, most "ideological" people tend to read only works confirming their own "ideologies". And let me say that ideology is very like as religion. Everybody needs axioms such as "all people are equal in dignity" or "murder is bad", or some others. But a lot of acritical people take dogmas, no matter religious or political. Left-wing people assume the dogma of assigning any natural disaster to global warming. Right-wing people assume the dogma of no global warming is possible through human (involuntary) agency. There are also cases of cherry-picking. Normally, conservatives denies not only anthropogenic global warming but also long-term trends in oli prices. On the contrary, the British Nationalist Party picks the global warming denial but assumes a peak oil crisis as imminent. Some right-wingers (and left-wingers alike) assume the existence of a Jewish conspiracy. Some others believe Israel is the last bulwark of Western Civilization. It is plainly impossible to discuss with dogmatic people. For them all it is Black and White. They are sad, angry people. Convictions! We need perhaps two or three convictions. More than three conviction is a burdensome weight.

And here:
"It just wasn't meant to be."
"Why not?"
"He ran Spain."
"Excuse me?"
"The country, he ran it! And then he died, poor man. Just as well. Tea?"

Basil Fawlty (to Manuel): You do have rats in Spain, don't you, or did Franco have then all shot? As for Will, he cannot be of biological origin. No human can go for decades with never a solitary hair out of place. But unlike some of the corporate sponsored professional denialists I suspect that Will really believes his claims.

I'm sure you have heard Adivina Adivinanza?

BTW, re: Torrente, I'm sure you've also heard Sabina's song with the very Torrente? It just blows my mind how someone can write such elegant verses about ANYTHING the same time as well as Sabina.

Where does one turn when the Wall Street Journal and Washington Times' op-ed pages aren't crazy enough? The Washington Post, of course. They've got quite the stable of lying nutjobs, with Will, Krauthamer, Kristol, Gerson, and Samuelson, plus some Dionne for masturbatory centrists and Millbank for masturbatory Villagers, it's a pretty wretched editorial crew.

You want a bad one when it comes to Global Warming? Check out the distilled BS put out by my paper's resident libertarian, Vin Suprynowicz of the Las Vegas Review Journal:

"A loony sect of modern flagellants" - 19JUL2009

. Ombudsman Andrew Alexander, who claimed that there had been fact-checking on multiple levels, did acknowledge things might have been handled a wee bit better, and then offered this sunny thought for the future: On its news pages, it can recommit to reporting on climate change that is authoritative and deep. On the editorial pages, it can present a mix of respected and informed viewpoints. And online, it can encourage dialogue that is robust, even if it becomes bellicose

I find it both hilarious and disturbing that someone might consider George Will's opinion on this matter "respected and informed".

The head priest of the parish has gone to visit the vatican so the junior cleric is standing in at confession. To avoid mistakes, his superior has left him with a list of sins and the appropriate pennance for each.
All is going well untill an altar boy comes in and says; "Bless me father for I have sinned. I've been giving out blow-jobs in exchange for sweets". The junior priest is lost, reading and rereading the list he was given with no luck. Finally, he snaps: "You're an altar boy. What does the priest usually give for a blow-job?"

Wait for it...

"Two mars bars and a curly-wurly".

Ka! to tha Ching!

"fact-checking on multiple levels"

And I suppose those levels would be "shallow," "very shallow," "mind-blowingly shallow," and "hovering five feet in the firmament."

I wonder sometimes what would happen if the world were turned upside down and the AGW-Denialists were proven right.

In a similar vein I wonder sometimes what I would think, do or say were there to be an event that proved or seemed to prove the existence of a deity. It's a flight of fancy I sometimes allow myself.
