It's July already? Time to tally up the votes in the last Molly nomination thread and induct yet another regular commenter into the Order of the Molly.
The acknowledged worthy for the month of May is Kel. About time, too, his name keeps coming up month after month, and someone is always jumping in to wave their arms about and eclipse him.
So now you have to think back over the past month of voluminous commenting and pick out a name that stood out for you, and leave it in the comments right here.

Seeing that Zeno has already won one, my nominations for June are Watchman and Cerberus.
Sastra in perpetuity with tentacle cluster, etc., etc.

My nominations for this month are:
Jadehawk
Watchman
Desert Son
Smoggy seems deserving as well, but I haven't gotten deeply involved in what seem to have been his/her best threads, so I'll defer to the others this time.

Order of the Molly, eh? What a wonderful tribute to a great progressive writer.
For those that miss Ms. Molly's humor, I'd like to suggest a visit to the not-a-blog of Susan Bankston at http://www.KissMyBigBlueButt.com. Her focus is not as broad as Molly's, but purt-near as sharp.

I'll put in a good word for him, but not actually a vote. Deal?

Jadehawk, for declaiming with such authority: “your interest in edible anuses has been duly noted.”

Smoggy Batzrubble

Congrats Kel - well earned. A strong and consistent effort and your posts are always on the mark.
Jadehawk and John Morales have made some great posts and I feel that Raven should be commended. My only regret is that the last month has been so busy that I haven't been able to follow all threads. The writing by many (even most) posters just gets better and better. I wish the trolls showed as much merit in their logic or writing.
Smoggy makes a compelling argument for Jadehawk, but is humble in the extreme (no doubt beaten into him by Rubber Floyd). Smoggy's clutching to religion in spite of all, his forthright and honest prose (and in sympathy for the abuses metered out to him by his cellmate) make him the obvious candidate.
I vote for smoggy. He makes me laugh.

As for this month, surely there are many candidates more deserving than that Watchman fellow. For example:

As usual, there're a number of worthwhile contenders for my nomination; it's never easy to single one out.
This time, I nominate Jadehawk, who's both harsh and understanding, and who takes no prisoners.
I even marked down the comment that decided it for me... ah, here.
Honorable mentions to 'Tis Himself, who's always excellent and to whom I always pay attention, and to Smoggy, who burst into the scene with a bang and who befuddles the fundies.
Also, were not Owlmirror, Kel, Wowbagger, awesome Sastra (and others) already Mollified, I'd be mentioning them. Heck, I am :)
PS [embarrassment] It's nice to see my name mentioned; but it's a bit of a worry, too. :)
Posted by: Logicel | July 7, 2009 5:53 AM
AJ Milne is my first choice. She writes in a unique, perky style always punctuated with several well driven points.
Then the second is Strange Gods Before Me for his relentless, sustained smashing of pompous, inflated, and arrogant idiocy.
Last but least, Rubber Floyd, opps, Smoggy because Smoggy is original, hilarious, and though silly still manages to issue comments peppered with the serious problems which blind adherence to religion presents.

For me, that would depend on the reason for the disagreement. If the argument is scientific, I wouldn't vote for someone who doesn't follow scientific principles. Which would leave out creationists and IDists. If the argument is political or philosophical, where more leeway is available as far as evidence goes, I could see it.Posted by: Jadehawk, OM

sili, if it makes you feel better, I thought you were female, and AJ Milne was male. I simply consider that proof that there really are few if any real gender-specific personality traits. Remove the optical (and aural) clues, and gender virtually evaporates :-)
Posted by: Watchman | July 7, 2009 3:18 PM
I can't say as I've ever encountered a male on the internet whose handle contained the word "jade"...
However, my experience - though extensive - is hardly definitive. ;-)
I disagree! No no, just kidding! I strongly agree. Age is difficult to guess, too. Anonymity on the 'net is the great equalizer - and yet, we all still make assumptions based on handle and tone... Interesting, eh?

... And actually, AJ Milne is male. Or is so far as s/he knows. But since it's been a couple of these threads now that someone's assumed otherwise... hey, whatever. If folk wish see me as female and Molly-worthy, I'm really pretty okay with that.
(... and I don't know who to nominate this time 'round yet. Apologies. I will plead fatigue, go back through a few threads, mebbe come back in here in a bit... it's been a long month.)
Posted by: Watchman | July 7, 2009 4:01 PM
Yep! Interesting.
I honestly can't remember, now, what I thought Jadehawk's gender might be when she first arrived here. It's possible that because I learned she was female not long afterwards, I've since overlaid my first impressions (which, perhaps, leaned towards male due to the "hawk") with the certain knowledge subsequently obtained. Hard to say.
In my case, that's true!

David used to think I was female, too, for some reason.
I think it's interesting, really, that I've managed to come across as such. I don't otherwise seems to communicate well with women.
What can I say, SCOM? I'm not one to be picky (at least not in that matter). And I do think I tend to fag it up a bit online.
What made you change your mind? I can't be that Max von Sydow was cast to be me, since Linda Hunt was cast as Mark Liberman.
Posted by: SC, OM | July 7, 2009 5:35 PM
Ah, but being a woman and communicaticating well with (other) women aren't the same thing.
;)
:) I thought you mentioned being male a few weeks back, but it may have been the von Sydow casting (didn't pick up on the other one)...
BTW, if there's ever a Pharyngula: The Movie, I suggest the actress Suzie Plakson to play Patricia. That's how I've always pictured her.

Of course. Good point.I just assumed (erroneously) that if I was capable of sounding like a woman, I should have some of the mental faculties to put myself in the mind of one. And thus presumably understand your species better ...
Posted by: Smoggy Batzrubble | July 7, 2009 6:12 PM
How come no one ever confuses my sex? I'm a woman trapped in a pervert's body. If there is ever a Pharyngula movie I would like to be played by Sasha Baron Cohen, he's the only one I'd trust to do the sheep-love with real authenticity.
Posted by: SC, OM | July 7, 2009 6:27 PM
Hmmmmm. Interesting. People online pretty much invariably think I'm a man unless I say I'm a woman or I'm arguing about specific issues. I kind of suspect that whatever these qualities are that come across as somehow masculine* might actually interfere with my communications with men (well, straight men) in general. Maybe not. Don't know. Maybe it's ignorance - perhaps if I understood better why it is that people make that assumption...

SC, I think it may be your aggressive and pugnatious style; it's (ahem) incongruent with the stereotypical "softer, warmer" female one.

Dear Sister Sili,
I think it is a very good thing that someone up thread questioned my existence. This is a science blog...everyone should question everything all the time in every place.
I'm pretty sure I'm not one of the other Mollys or non-Mollys, but I won't be certain until I've developed a hypothesis and subjected myself to rigorous testing.
The one thing I am sure is that I have nothing to do with that sad dog turd called Happy Kiwi.
While I'm on the stump, I should also point out that I am a Bible-Believing-Christian (BBC) unfairly imprisoned and unwillingly bonked for the importation of powdered ram semen.
Right now I am writing my life story in full technicolour which I intend to sell to all godly Christian Book Stores.

Patricia @ 93 wrote: "No vote for Smoggy until we see if his poetry is a one hit wonder or if he can keep it up."
Dear Sister Patricia,
Clearly my sensitive birthday poem has left you craving more. But who'd post verse on a blog where the sinuous cuttlefish swims? He's like the Casanova of poets, whereas I'm like a sad stickman, devoid of finesse, afflicted by premature literary ejaculation. A word to all: DO NOT VOTE FOR ME! OTHERS HAVE BEEN HERE FAR LONGER AND ARE MORE DESERVING. I UNDERSTAND NO SCIENCE AND HAVE EXPERTISE ONLY IN SARCASM AND OFFENSIVE RUDENESS.
However, as you, Patricia, are clearly desperate to know whether I can keep it up, I have downed a double hit of viagra-for-poets, and inspired by a tumescence of ideas I hereby tender this:
KEEPING IT UP
Award me a Molly,
It’s the straight road to folly,
For I am a servant of God!
And if you anoint me,
I’ll say you appoint me,
To act as his staff and his rod!
My Molly in hand,
I’ll travel the land,
Declaring ‘I won it for Christ!
Our crucified Saviour,
Who did us a favor,
And got temporarily iced.’
My fame it will grow!
I’ll have my own show:
“God’s Hour With Smoggy Oh-Em.”
The faithful will come,
To join in the fun,
And I’ll start a selective harem—
Replete with nude girls,
Five merinos with curls,
And a eunuch I think I’ll call Leather.
He’ll be my old bubba,
The felon Floyd Rubber,
Whose balls I will willingly sever,
And serve on a plate,
With lychees and dates,
And a savoury sausage for afters.
And as Floyd looks on,
My harem I’ll prong,
And then I will shout to the rafters:
‘With God on my side,
I can fuck whom I like,
And rob them of all of their money.
It’s hardly a sin,
When it’s done with a grin.
In fact, it’s exquisitely funny!’

Sorry for the little poke, John. Just teasing
(And I voted for you above, so you can't really be angry.)
(*tilts head and smiles sweetly*)
And thanks for answering. It's strange - seems to happen even when I'm not being, as far as I can tell, particularly aggressive or combative...

Wow. I vote for Smoggy Batzrubble [if only to ruin his chances].

No worries, SC — I deserved it.
Pride comes before a fall, and I'm too proud to use a spellchecker.

@101, uh-oh. I'm not changing my vote, but bloody hell, that's doggerel with style!
+1 Smoggie.

Late as usual but having been convinced by his steadfastness and piety, persuaded by his confessed love for our dear savior and observant in his attitude towards his brethren in all manners both public and private I vote for Smoggy Batzrubble. I had an idea he would earn my vote.
Quick, inventive, sharp witted and pretty good grammar. I'd go fishin' with this guy.

I love this entry by Carlie. If he has not yet been awarded, I am puzzled. It's Molly-Worthy Content.

Heh. I also just added Carlie to my list for that post. For July, though.
Interesting how I already have three of those, while I usually forget to keep tabs.
Perhaps I'm reading more comments now that I'm unemployed ... might explain why I'm so behind on writing applications (and why they're so crap) ...
And why it's 5 o'clock in the morning ...

Ophelia Benson. For being persistent, opinionated, pointed, and a chronic pain in the accommodationist ass.
