This is not an attack on the First Amendment rights of people who believe in faith healing. We just don't believe the First Amendment allows them to inflict their views upon their children and let them die from such things as infections, when one quick trip to a doctor would cure the problem. Children should not have to die to uphold the religious beliefs of their parents.

Tales of the 300 … more accounts of the Creation “Museum”

You know, it wasn't just me at the horrible little creationist theme park — there were over 300 of us! In this blog entry, I intend to collect your stories about the zerg in Kentucky. E-mail links to me and I'll add them to this list. Or, if you'd rather, just leave links in the comments here and I'll promote them up top as I find the time.

I want more! Send them in to me soon.

News

We were the top story on the ABC News site for a while.

The Examiner covers the story.

Blogs

Tell us your side of the story!

No Guy in the Sky has some overall thoughts and thinks the Creation "Museum" is KY Jelly to Christians.

The Empirical Infidel rebuts Pastor Tom, flashes a nice t-shirt (I remember that one!) and gives a quick impression.

Le Café Witteveen confirms what I've said about it: no biology, and well-behaved atheists. He also has a photo collection.

Cincinnati Man also took lots of pictures.

Jen has two summaries up already. She also has a store — buy swag with PZ vs. Ham art!

Now added: Part 3! And 4 and 5! 6! 7! 8! 9! I think the blogathon has permanently warped her brain.

A Christian minister has several comments — he's critical of the "museum", but he's also critical of the atheists (in which he is wrong — Sean Faircloth's talk at the SSA meeting was superb.)

The Pensive Corner reviews some of the very silly displays.

Mark obviously got a laugh out of it.

The Ruffington Post captured both Hemant and me.

Freethought Fort Wayne sent a couple of representatives on the trip.

Some of you may have noticed a small odd green and white blob on the nose of the saddled triceratops. That was a little birdie placed there by Evo-Devo Mike's son Alexander.

Greg Laden collects a few links.

Will of the People summarizes the whole conference, as well as the "museum" trip.

AiG claims the continents rearranged themselves during the Flood year. Here's a little math to show how crazy that idea is.

The "museum" is full of dogmatic presuppositions.

Berlzebub learned a few things at the mausoleum. I missed Nessie in the pond.

Wait a minute. This fellow in our group is a Christian. Weren't we supposed to stone him or something?

We didn't just look — at least one person had a conversation.

The trip has already entered legend as the journey of the 300.

We learned a few interesting things about Martin Luther and Charles Templeton.

It was the Flintstones Museum!

"Creepy as hell" is a good description of the animatronics.

Some people learned things at the "museum". Alas for Ken Ham, they weren't what he intended.

Some people brought their children into that den of ignorance. It was OK, though, since it inspired some rational discussion.

The Obligate Scientist has several posts on the museum.

Hemant has a round-up of his impressions, which includes a sampling of the offensive t-shirts people were wearing.

Have you turned something from the visit into art? I'll put it here. (My pose atop the dino seems to have caught a little attention here.)

Epic Poetry!

"A visit from PZ"
by Rich Stage

There was a Professor from Morris
who gathered the cast and the chorus.
And we all headed down
to visit the clowns
and the bibleists that all abhor us.

As day broke, sunny and grand,
the heathens from all o'er the land
north, east, west and south
all by different routes,
for reason we'd take a firm stand.

To Kentucky we all did flock.
Racing so we'd beat the clock
so if we were inclined
we might head up the line
so we could be the first to mock.

With ticket and button in hand
we followed through with our plan:
for ourselves to see
the insanity
of Ken Ham's folly first hand.

As soon as we walked in the door:
Behold! A large pterasaur!
Graceful and free -
or not. It could be
it evolved to stay off the floor.

The next thing we saw was bizarre -
a grazing and growling brontosaur!
Then we saw what they did
with the raptors and kids.
The Flintstonescan't be too far!

The Grand Canyon was, so they say,
carved by the flood in mere days.
If you ignored all the facts,
or hit your head with an axe
or replaced your brain with mayonnaise.

They said if we came we'd believe,
but not after Adam and Eve!
We laughed, not from spite -
we could tell from first sight
that this place was built to deceive

Next was Noah and his Ark.
The departure from fact was stark!
While the rain quickly poured
God put the dinos on board
but didn't have room for the shark.

Heaven forbid if you doubt them
cause no one's more honest than Ken Ham!
He said "You can trust us!"
"We're just lying for jebus!"
and the creo-zombies echo "Amen!"

If there was one part of that twaddle
that kept me from coming unraveled
was the sight of PZ
gloriously
on the dino that was wearing a saddle.

While there we laughed and we learned.
We left wondering how facts could be spurned.
The day went as we thought.
The science was naught.
So we vowed we would never return.

Here is the moral of my tale:
stay away from this shrine to fail!
But if visit you must,
to hide your disgust
go filled up with whiskey and ale.

You know, I think it really is a museum and could be called the same--as long as it's made clear that it's a museum of stupid old ideas that are being clung to in defiance of all of the evidence.

It's really a great place to discover the mindlessness of religion as made uniquely stupid by modern means.

I love the guard dog comment from the Christian minister. But I'm happy to set the record straight. Actually the CM staff wasn't really paranoid, they needed those guard dogs because they just knew you'd be smuggling Barack Obama in with dozens of Kervorkian suicide machines to euthanize the mentally retarded and the geriatric folk as you wound your way through the exhibits leaving scorch marks on the stone floors from your cloven hooves. I'm sure the staffers can attest to the lingering odor of brimstone still wafting through the air from your visit. Don'cha know...

By calling it a Museum, the creationists are saying that they have a pagan temple to the Greek Muses. I wonder if pointing that out would make them change the name since they believe in word magic?

It was a blast and I thought it was incredible bunch of kids. I really enjoyed the day interfacing with all.
There are some interesting comments in this thread.

The minister linked to above criticizes (in a post from today) the museum's "latent dualism" between (man's) reasoning on the one hand and "God's word" on the other. Then, two breaths later, we get this:

The problem with this is that God tells us differently. He invites us to reason, to think, to question.

So, you see, the Creation Museum is naughty because they promote a distinction between human reasoning and what god tells us to do. And the reason it's naughty is because "God tells us differently".

This guy (gal?) should give an "Attie" to him/herself.

Not only were the two vids of mine included, but the pic of the Jurassic Pigeon (labeled as such in my Flickr) is too.

I took 170 pics and 1 vid of the front door (though the vid is nothing special and only like 3 seconds long), so there's plenty to look at.

As for my two vids, I added in a lot more humor in the 2nd one. I'm somewhat new so my thoughts aren't very composed but people seem to generally like them both.

I had fun, it was fun. Cheerio!

It's all great. By the way, if anyone took a photo of me on the triceratops, I'd love to see it and get a copy of it. My camera battery died before we got through the museum.

I was the guy wearing the black American University Rationalists and Atheists shirt and I was on the triceratops right before PZ.

The video showing their rendition of the inside of the ark was interesting. According to Ken Ham (http://docs.google.com/gview?a=v&q=cache:-SyTXuAF-IkJ:www.answersingenesis.org/radio/pdf/noahsflood.pdf+ken+ham+great+flood&hl=en&gl=us) the "great flood" happened 4,500 years ago. I was just in Giza, where they have a beautiful little museum for the funerary Nile barge (the "Solar Boat") that was buried next to Khufu's pyramid 4,600 years ago. It was much better built. Just saying.

Everytime I see the picture of PZ on the tricerotops that I took, I feel so proud of what we did. Thanks PZ and everyone else who went there for making these past two days quite amusing!

Wish I would've gotten on the triceratops... I'm going to go back soonish and get that photo op. If the guards interject I'll offer them money... I don't think they're police so they can be bribed, right?

Also, the traditionally dressed folks were Mennonites, not Amish or Quaker. They told me they were Mennonites but I couldn't remember until someone pointed it out on one of my videos.

Badwolf quiered: Did anyone notice what appears to be Quakers in some of the pics?****

Mostly likely not, Quakers dropped the plain dress thing a long time ago but many folks still think they dress like the Quaker Oats guy.

I have Quakes in the family and went a Quaker wedding this summer-the bride was not dressed in a long white boring dress, on no. She wore a tight, sexy wine colored dress that exposed some of her tattoo's. She is a life long Quake from a Quaker family.

My nephew, the groom wore a blue suit, they made a good looking couple. Later at the party there was plenty of booze and good times going down!

Usually, you can't tell a Quake from any modern person today.

Like many others at the Cremation Museum last Friday, I entered the place joking and ridiculing what we were about to see. The experience fully lived down to my expectations. However, after listening to Dr. Lisle, who claims to be a PhD astrophysicist, I left Mr. Hamm's erection feeling sad and angry. I realized that Hamm and his employees have conspired to assemble a presentation which has to be completely convincing to anyone without a science background, or at least some awareness of the rules of logic. Dr. Lisle is of the opinion that one may start a logical argument with unnecessary and unwarranted assumptions, such as the existence of god, and then proceed to the conclusion dictated by these assumptions and end up with a rigorously proven claim. Most of his audience will agree with him and will feel that their superstitions have finally been scientifically vindicated. The children will be expected to accept this system of "reasoning" and will learn that if they start to think outside their little fundamentalist christian box, family loyalty will exert a huge pressure on them to return to the fold and conform. That's if they ever do begin to think. [The evil of religion begins when children are taught to disregard their own moral sense.] Most of the photos I took at the CM are posted at http://picasaweb.google.com/danmacduff. THE LINK DOESN'T WORK (for some reason) You MUST type the url into your browser.

I just read the ABC News article, and this bit gave me the biggest belly laugh I've had in a looong while:

Adam and Eve share the Garden of Eden with dinosaurs; the beaks of Darwin's finches are explained by God's will, not evolution; and mankind spread from continent to continent by walking across the floating trunks of trees knocked down during the Biblical Flood.

People actually believe that?! Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahha!

"Hey, look, the whole frickin' ocean is covered in tree trunks. Let's see if we can walk across them for hundreds of miles and see if we don't find some kind of landmass that's too distant to see from here. Hope it's not just ocean!"

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! Something gives me the feeling Ken Ham has never tried to balance himself on a floating log. It's really really hard! And to do that for hundreds and hundreds of miles? Wow. It's incredible the crazy things people will believe to maintain their ideology in the face of contradictory evidence.

It just tickles the hell out of me that everyone had a memorable and mostly happy time at the good ol' Hamitup Dino Ranch and Proper Assumption Emporium. (I note that y'all were being have. Nice.)

Of particularly welcome note is that there were a couple of small flusterclucks (who could have foreseen?) and that the character of them was one of self-fulfilling prophecy by virtue of the prescience of the Emporium's staff.

They expected trouble and, when such seemed not to be forthcoming even with their leverage of expectation, lo! it was found. Delivered up miraculously, in their moment of doubt and indecision, by their faithful dog. Even as they were smote by such threats as a young mans T-shirt and the snickers of the multitudes. And defensiveness! Oh, my!

Dog is so dracious; ask and receive. Must be nice . . .

Could I get a confirmation on that 'Hebrew Lesson' clip. It's pretty funny if Ham's Creationists really did mash together the letters out of order and upside and even invented a new one.

Certainly with their intended audience, there would be no need to research their putative scholarship. Language or Science, they make of them whatever they will.

In case you wonder why, here is where the term originated.

Speaking of the Hebrew Fail, I'm guessing the box to the left of the Hebrew is supposed to be Arabic...yeah, it looks kind of like Arabic, but it has the same problems as the Hebrew. The first letter to the left is an Arabic letter, between the jibberish in the middle it remotely looks like the Arabic letter for "n", and the letter to the right looks like an upsidedown Arabic "s". What were they thinking?

I can confirm that the Hebrew letters were bass-ackwards and upside-down. The one furthest to the right -- the one the speaker said was not a Hebrew letter -- is indeed sufficiently confusing that I can understand the conclusion. However, it certainly looks like it is supposed to be a hebrew letter, and after staring at a close-up (from the link @#47 ), it looks like a tsade (צ) rotated 90 degrees clockwise, which makes no sense at all, or it's an aleph (א) flipped upside down like the resh (ר) it is next to is flipped.

Yeah, it's just plain weird no matter how you look at it.

Fortunately, this version does not end with the slaughter of the 300 atheists. It would also be good if we could avoid the whole somewhat neofascist subtext that permeates the film. And the rascist depiction of Persians. And the homo-erotic, digitally enhanced, overpumped musculature stuff as well. OK, maybe this isn't such a good analagy after all. . .

Thanks to all the bloggers for their pics and accounts, makes for hours of entertainment !!

And the 64000.- question is : Will the family from Virginia that had their trip ruined by the awful atheists' presence want their money back now that the hebrew and arabic texts in the museum have been shown to be rubbish?

I feel as though I've stumbled upon a free, "all you can eat!" buffet. Yee-ha!
Thanks to PZ and everyone for providing all the posts, pics and art. I intend to indulge in unbridled consumption, as soon as I can.

I'd just like to extend a big thanks to everyone who's posted photos/videos about the recent trip to the "museum". I've looked through a good number
now and think some could be quite iconic in years to come if not already...you know the one I mean!

What does the Chinese Characters say on the Babel poster?

The best I can make of it is 雨月桉. All it say is "rain moon press it's hands on." What's that's suppose to mean?

Nothing whatsoever. It's a random collection of characters – just like the Greek (S-G-PH-P-PS, an assortment of letters obviously chosen for not looking too much like Latin ones) and the Cyrillic (A-B-V-G, the first 4 letters of the alphabet, deliberately in an ancient font to avoid having them look too much like anything else) and probably all others.

Besides, isn't it funny how they pretend to illustrate the diversity of languages by illustrating the diversity of scripts? Someone please post this on failblog.

I don't know a thing about Hebrew though, so another person's opinion would probably be good.

Make up your own here.

Troll Commander; "Our lies will darken the sun."

Captain Batzrubble; "Then we will reason in the shade."

:-D

And the homo-erotic, digitally enhanced, overpumped musculature stuff as well.

Except for "digital" and possibly "enhanced", that actually is historically accurate.

All in all, the Creation "Museum" makes me have even less respect for creationists than I had before. I no longer view them as being just very religious people that are holding onto a belief system they very dearly need. No, they are nothing more than brain dead slugs that will lie about anything, no matter how stupid, to get in the limelight. They desire nothing more than to create controversy by poisoning the well of intellectual study. There is no difference between them and the Bigfoot hunter, or the UFO "enthusiast" with a tin foil hat on. Once they cast their inner most thoughts into 3-D displays it just becomes so crystal clear exactly how lost they are. It really makes me lose hope for humanity to find out many people fall for this superstitious bullshit story.

Hey Everyone,

I posted some clarifications on my feelings on Sean Faircloth's talk. We had a good phone conversation and I wanted to clear up my remarks.

There is also a mousepad.

I couldn't set the royalty to "0" soooo...next best thing. Any royalties made will go back to Secular Student Alliance.

Thanks to www.SneerReview.blogspot.com for the graphic.

If you want me to take it down for any reason, please let me know and I'll happily oblige. I simply saw multiple people ask for it, and thought...Ask and thou shall receive.

One more thing about the Hebrew lesson:
As mentioned the japanese/chinese characters to the very left of the sign obviously do NOT MEAN ANYTHING. I'm a japanologist 3rd semester and there is no word that utilizes these together. They are just randomly thrown together, the first one being "rain", the second one meaning "moon" and the last one "evening".
One of my fellow students is native chinese and said there's no combination in chinese either.

Posted by: Tiska | August 11, 2009 11:53 AM

I just saw someone who wrote the characters: it's not "press hand on" it's "yoru" 夜. It's hard to recognize on the video, but I'm quite sure of it.

Im calling my blog "PZ and the Army of 300"

Re: Pozz #68
Feel free to use the graphic, it just took me a few minutes on photoshop to put it together.
Your action in donating money from the sale to the SSA, however, has given me an idea.
There is clearly a market for these sorts of items (pro-science, funny products) and yet the only major sources of them at the moment are commercial.
I wonder if it would be useful to set up a proper site - maybe linked to somewhere like Pharyngula, where we could have the opportunity to purchase these sorts of things but know that any profit was going to a secular charity - Medicine Sans Frontier/Doctors Without Borders - for instance.
I suspect there are plenty of talented pro-science designers out there who would probably be happy to join in, if its for a good cause.

Well, I was supposed to get some work done this afternoon and instead have surfaced after a loooong time perusing this thread. And re: Glen D. (#6): I was thinking the same thing. A museum to antiquated ideas, maybe. I was actually surprised that they had almost no science, not even fake science. I guess I shouldn't have been.

I just noticed that one their evidences for humans and dinosaurs cohabitating is actually a snake "pictograph" with extraneous scratches that makes it look like it has legs. For reference, the picture was close to the end of Satan's parakeet's (the triceratops picture above) flickr slide show.

If you were convinced that a certain book was the best book ever,
so convinced you build an entire organization to defend the accuracy of that book,
so convinced of it's greatness, your organization spends Millions to make a museum mostly about the first chapter,
and the book was available in the language it was originally written,
Wouldn't you, the founder of this organization, learn how to read that language, or at least have some in your organization who can,
and when you build your museum, wouldn't you care enough to have someone literate in that language create or at least proofread the example of that language you put on display?

The fact they don't suggests one things.

They don't value knowledge at all, even knowledge about the one object in the world they claim to love the most.
