I almost forgot! We started off the day with a panel discussion for the Dogma Free America podcast. It was me, Sunsara Taylor, and William B. Davis (the 'cigarette man' on the X-Files, skeptics!), which made for an interestingly diverse group. Check out the podcast when it is available.

Random Quote
In the infancy of new religions, the wise and learned commonly esteem the matter too inconsiderable to deserve their attention or regard. And when afterwards they would willingly detect the cheat, in order to undeceive the deluded multitude, the season is now past, and the records and witnesses, which might clear up the matter, have perished beyond recovery.

Cigarette-smoking man used to terrify me when I was younger.
Somehow have him on our side is actually rather comforting.

That might be worth downloading for hearing the voice alone.

Is it too dogmatic for me to assert that ciggies are teh eevil?
Perhaps the ciggies was the reason that fox's mom got custody in their bitter divorce, and nothing to do with her affair with the guy fox called 'dad'.

The podcast was short (about 7 minutes), but very well done. PZ was especially clear when answering the question about the award given to Bill Maher. PZ's answer was even sound-bite worthy. Maybe he's getting better at this radio interview stuff.

The smoking man's character was called 'Cancer Man' when first introduced then changed to 'Smoking Man'. Always wondered about that.
I guess the "I Want to Believe" poster in Fox Mulder's offce wasn't for him......

#5- The smoking man's character was called 'Cancer Man' when first introduced then changed to 'Smoking Man'.
Could be they changed it because they did an episode where a guy (Dr. Romano from "E.R.") had a body made entirely of cancer cells. At one point, he was decapitated, and just grew another head. He kind of became the show's "cancer man".

RickR....
My thought's were that their advertiser's, ie, Phillips Morris, did not like it. Phillip Morris sells a lot more than just ciggies these days.

no one wants a dogma free america. a prevailing dogma in North America is that ethnic diversity is a strength for a country. Where's the evidence?
For certain issues, we are all politicians rather than scientists, and it's good to be reminded of that every so often.

Sorry to disagree, but my memory disagrees with yours. He was originally "Cigarette-Smoking Man". Mulder would occasionally shorten this to "Cancerman" when he was angry or wanted to be rude to the guy.

sounds like a very political answer

No more so than the question, which was oozing politics. The deficiencies of those countries that try to snuff ethnic diversity are perspicuous; while no one suggests it's going to produce a utopia, a reasonable tolerance for ethnic diversity is certainly a relative strength.

Thanks so much to PZ and the other panelists. It was great to have you all. Unfortunately, we had a technical difficulty with the recording of the podcast. We were using four separate mics to record the show using Garage Band, and right at the end of the panel, Garage Band crashed without saving the file. The backup recorder that I was using came out with such horrible audio quality that it is unusable. So, I am sorry to announce that I will not be able to release a podcast of the panel. Still, there is an interview with PZ up right now, if you are interested.

Damn, I thought that said "Dog Free America" and I was ready to jump on the bandwagon. No more digging dog crap out of my front yard or scraping it off my shoe.
Oh, "DogMA Free America". Well that's good too I guess.
