The best argument for the use of the name Agnostic is simply that the word Atheist has been so long covered with all manner of ignorant calumny, that it is expedient to use a new term, which though in some respects faulty, has a fair start, and will in time have a recognized meaning. The case so stated is reasonable; but there is a per contra that whatever the motive with which the name is used, it is now tacked to half a dozen conflicting forms of doctrine, varying loosely between Theism and Pantheism. The name of Atheism escapes that drawback. Its unpopularity has saved it from a half-hearted and half-minded patronage.

Of course not. Congratulations to the parents. May the baby grow up healthy and atheist.

SEF, I guess so. The baby obviously isn't Christian so it isn't like us Jews are going to want its blood to make our matzah. So yeah, go ahead.

Huxley? Every Tom, Dick and Harry is named Huxley.

Well, congratulations to the happy parents. If it is their first child, boy, are they in for a big surprise.
Speaking of spawn, my youngest spawn will soon be blogging on 'teen skepchick'.

They should have called him "Bin"

OOhhh, I forgot, her blog name will be Lyra Linx.

Wow. Mrs L looks amazing! I don't think I've ever looked that good in my entire life and she's just given birth. I thought that sort of thing only happened in sitcoms and soaps?

Did they have time to eat turkey?

Congratulations, Greg! A very good-looking child with a very good name, as well.

Nice name, yes. Who made the winning suggestion?

Of course, I'm very anti-spawning, so I'll just keep quiet now.

My little sister also had her second child today; a boy, 8 lbs.

Now, if she's smart and/or sane she'll stop right there.

If this is not empirical evidence that Greg Laden has had sex I don't know what is.

I really can't resist this ... Baby Food

(Warning - NephilimFree ahead. You'll have to tough it out for the first 50 seconds but it's worth it.)

Congratulations to the lovely mummy and daddy, but really, Huxley?
It's a surname, for crying out loud.
you merkins are nuts.

Congrats, Ladens.
Do you have an obese relative named heavily?
I agree that you selected a historically propitious name, I can't help but feel for young Huxley at entering about the 3rd grade in American public schools. Ah well.

So will he have a log called Huxley Laden?

Weird first names are de rigueur nowadays. Poor little fellow. Strange first names result in more beatings and lowered expectations.

"Poor little fellow. Strange first names result in more beatings and lowered expectations."

Nah, it'll be abbreviated through the natural selection of boyhood to "Huck". Not a bad moniker ever since Mark Twain penned his American masterpiece.

If he ever moves to England and gets knighted he can change it back to the very posh "Sir Huxley"

Well congratulations!
Personally I like the name. It's never good to be one of 5 with the same name in the class at school.

@#8 Beat me to it.

I'd have hid to call him Osamabin. They could call him Ozzy for short.

Huxley? Every Tom, Dick and Harry is named Huxley.

Well, one Tom is in any case. :o)

And that Tom was at the same time a Harry…

What a lucky kid to have been born at a time when we have finally received proof of alien contact.

Someone call Bill Donouhe! He needs to set up a rescue mission for this baby!

#33

Posted by: Biology Blogger | November 27, 2009 9:47 AM

I don't think we should be labeling the baby as an atheist. For all we know he wants to join Fred Phelps' church.

May good fortune (and his good friends) protect this potential free thinker from being indoctrinated into some obscure mental labyrinth. Learn to think critically, and to evaluate carefully in due time.

In the mean time, the call is for other pleasures.
