It's another podcast, this time with Mother Jones magazine.
I just finished cleaning up something like 400 spam comments made here, so it's with grim resignation that I notice the podcast already has a spam comment on it. Is there some reason my name should be associated with sanitary ball valves?

It could be worse. You could be associated with penis enlargement or ED.

Hi,
Just an observation on spam... sometimes when I pop onto your blog to read the (excellent) content, the banner ad from Google keeps trying to make me buy the Bible on CD.
Is this a new form of very below the line advertising?
In this vein, should non religious mob all Christian forums with the tag Athiest or Darwin so that the faithful get auotmated ads for 'On the Origin of Species', or 'God is not Great?'
Just an observation on a cold windy afternoon from Ireland.
Bye.

PZ: I love ya, and thanks SO much for trying for all of us...but do whatever you have to with registration, broken or not. Commenting is great, but I would rather have Pharyngula from the sidelines with fewer comments than PZ-in-an-institution-because-of-spam. Especially when SB claims they're Really Really Working On It This Time.

#3 Here's the thing. Advertising isn't free. Let them advertise their medieval horse shit all they want. It's not going to convince anyone anyway, and it's costing them money, just the same.

All this spam is God's punishment for not believing in him.

Arrrgh. I've already added far too many 'casts you've been in without listening to them.

Perhaps the spammer meant "bi-valves"...

Yes. Just type "pz" and "valve" into a google search. For instance, rpz valves (reduced pressure zone) often have pz in the part number. At least, that's what the oracle told me.

Ah, the strange connections. I've also discovered that my name sometimes turns up history and wargaming sites: "Pz" is an abbreviation for "Panzer".

Why don't you get off this crappy science blog software and go private with Wordpress or something that has a large variety of rock solid spam filtering software and rejection addons?

"Is there some reason my name should be associated with sanitary ball valves?"
Depends upon how tidy you wish to be.

I get spam on my blog, which is (mostly) about photography. I use Pentax camera gear. Know what Pentax makes besides consumer photo equipment? Medical equipment. Endoscopes, to be precise.
Yes, I've received "endoscope spam" on my blog. Fortunately it's not as bad as it sounds. :)

Oh my yes! Oh, the countless hours I spent moving "Pz IBs" and "Pz Kpfws" and the like around maps in the old SSI games...sigh. Good memories. 'Course I was never hardcore, like those ASL guys are.
I'm not used to thinking of spam trying to sell valves of all things. I thought it was always porn, drugs (real and SCAM) and scammers.

I have just heard about this application, "Akismet". I know that it seems to work exclusively with Wordpress, however you can alter it yourself to work for your own purposes.I know that it is necessary to have a few programming skills, but I thought that this might come in handy for you. From some of your posts, you have shown evidence for knowing a bit about programming, so I thought that I would suggest it. I do hope that it can be an option that you can pursue.

I think of myself as a naturalist as opposed to a supernaturalist. I believe it's a better description than calling myself an atheist. They're always some people who argue that to call yourself an atheist is a relgion.

Maybe this?
Dinish D'Souza might have more satisfying orgasms if he fantasizes about having sex with Ann Coulter while he masturbates ...
After all, I have it on good authority that that is one of her nom de tubes!

No, it's automated advertising. Google does what it always does – it looks for words –, and assigns ads to pages on that basis.
See comment 5: cdesign proponentsists are financing ScienceBlogs this way.

Let's fight to destroy the ignorance of "relgion."

Google is secretly trying to force everyone to surf only with adblock. As soon as everyone is surfing only with adblock, they will RULE THE WORLD!!!Posted by: athena | November 3, 2009 4:31 PM
PZ, just wait till your name is associated with vaginal specula...oh, never mind.

I have heard people manually screening and deleting their in-boxes as 'flushing the toilet'. Given you have some automation to delete obvious spam and trolls if could be called the 'Flush-O-Matic'. Along this line, if you were to make a small change you wouldn't be the first to associate a flushing sound with the delete button.

Ball valves are difficult to sanitize.
I recommend going with butterfly valves.

Well if you have a filter doing it for you, why bother noticing?

Ah, the strange connections.
I know what you mean. A few years after I started using this name, I learned it was also the name of a Michael Jackson fansite - the King of Pop Discussion board. Heh. :-)
