Nah, I know you didn't…but I finally got around to tallying up the votes, and the winners of the Molly award for the month of September are Desert Son [New complementary close under construction] and Feynmaniac. You may now give them the traditional champagne shower.
While you're at it, start nominating commenters for the October Molly. You have forgotten October, I know, and are thinking November and Thanksgiving and all that, but you're going to have to try and recollect before the big push in the War on Christmas comes along and all other issues have to be neglected.

This is funny and sad at the same time. Intelligent Designer has pled guilty on his blog entry Expelled From Pharnygula and wants to be let back on Pharyngula. Should we release him from the dungeon?
Posted by: Owlmirror | November 19, 2009 1:17 AM
Given that dungeoning is PZ's sole decision, "we" will not be doing any releasing. Of course, it may amuse him to set up thread for votes both for and against amnesty for particular dungeon denizens. But that's his choice as well.
Some of the dungeon entries imply a limited time period; others obviously don't deserve any such consideration (especially by reason of INSANITY).
Sastra has rather reasonably argued that banning should be as limited as possible, so as to give the regulars fodder to argue against. Of course, I have an allergy to presuppositionalists that gives me a strong bias against those who use that particular apologetic, and many of the banned have bad habits that are very similar to presuppositionalism.
But even if PZ will not undungeon anyone for any reason whatsoever, I, at least, plead that he remove the word "Caledonian" from the list of banned words.

Seriously though, thank you everyone. I will try not to embarrass the Order too badly with my penis jokes. My vote this month goes to Lynna and John Morales for his insightful and witty commentary.

Congrats to Desert Son and Feynmaniac. Both are well-deserved.
I'll second the nominations for AJ Milne and aratina cage. This is not simply because I'm fucking wasted right now. They frequently kick ass, and to such a degree that, in certain circumstances, even though it was not my ass being kicked, I still thought I could feel it at the time. In case you haven't figured it out yet, that means they're fucking awesome.
The fact is, there are so many great commenters here that deserve a sincere thank you. I hope you know who you are. Whether you're entertaining, informative, or just plain awesome in whatever way, I just have to say how much I appreciate your contributions.
Posted by: H.H. | November 19, 2009 4:15 AM
Ok, off topic. But perhaps everyone read the story today about the crazy religious woman who was going out of town and needed a safe place to keep her valuables, so she chose the grounds of a monument dedicated to the Virgin Mary which was open to the public. Hid about $40,000 in rare coins under some leaves, which was later uncovered by a groundskeeper employed by the Catholic University which oversees the shrine.
Link: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_odd_grotto_hidden_coins
The most interesting thing to me in this whole story was what the director of the shrine, the person in charge of this "holy" site, had this to say about the woman's actions:
See what he just revealed? "The woman was very faithful and this faithfulness caused her to make a completely reckless and irrational decision that neither you nor I would ever do because we aren't insane." He basically just admitted that he was fleecing the faithful, that special brand of stupid people that make the irrational decision to keep his coffers filled. The reporter really should have pressed him more on that. Asked if there could be such a thing as too faithful.Posted by: wiley | November 19, 2009 4:24 AM

"Of course, it may amuse him to set up thread for votes both for and against amnesty for particular dungeon denizens. But that's his choice as well"
Seems like it would set a bad precedent. The common factor of all the dungeon denizens is a pathological need for attention.

Torn on the whole "letting people out of the dungeon" thing...
On the one hand, I do like the idea of someone sincerely learning the error of their ways and returning with a renewed commitment to rationality and reason...
However, I also know that PZ isn't one to stifle anyone's desire to express their views, no matter how stupid, lightly... each and every member of the dungeon has earned there way there through the arduous process of subjecting the rest of us to mind-numbing and repeated displays of stupidity and stubborn adherence to PRATT (my new favorite catch-phrase, by the way). I, for one, don't like the idea of diminishing the essence of being "plonked" by letting people out.
At the very least, I think a banning should carry a minimum time frame... six months for example, and the petitioner for reinstatement must present a clear and cogent case for their re-admission, complete with blog entries, posts, or other supporting materials that lend credence to petition.

Congratulations to Feynmaniac and Desert Son. The Induction Orgy is scheduled for tonight. Details about time and place will be sent directly to both of you, after all, this is a secret society. Just be prepared for the amount and variety of tentacle porn.
Desert Son, for a closing line, for many years I have liked Neither Gods Nor Masters. No Kings was just so close.
I have to vote for Lynna this time around. Though I have read books like American Massacre: The Tragedy at Mountain Meadows by Sally Denton and Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith by Jon Krakauer, I knew more about jack mormons than the workings of the modern mormon church. With the mormons backing so much of the anti-LGBT legislation, I give thanks to her for sharing her knowledge of these people.

Congratulations, Feynmaniac, OM! Outstanding.
Many thanks, everyone. This was a delightful surprise to find this morning after a long and trying day yesterday (and not on account of the Ray Comfort Self-Deception Society . . . *whistles tune from The Italian Job*). I'm very grateful, and still consider myself kohai among so many senpei and sensei here at Pharyngula.
My votes for October are, once again, the esteemed:
John Morales
and, the excellent:
AJMilne
Thanks also to all those making suggestions on the close. Owlmirror and JBlilie, I'm grateful for the fondness you have for "No kings;" I'm just ready for a change, and perhaps the OM induction post is the time to do it. Janine got to the heart of it: I should have started with "Neither gods nor masters" way back when, but at the time, and in the circumstances, I chose "No kings." "Neither gods nor masters" was really what I was trying to get at; like Janine said, "so close." Still, I've seen someone else post at Pharyngula signing "Neither gods nor masters" (can't remember who just now), and while that sentiment remains close to my heart, and while "No mullets" is, indeed, a worthy option, I've chosen something else that reflects one of the reasons I visit Pharyngula.
Again, congratulations to Feynmaniac, and thank you all, and thanks, PZ, for such a great forum for exploration and discussion and education.
Still learning,
Robert

As for my votes, I haven't been keeping up with my Pharyngulareading well enough recently to have a timely vote (I'm still recovering from my recent electoral ass-whuppin')... but based on a somewhat longer view of things, there's absolutely nothing to argue with in others' nominations of Aratina Cage and John Morales.

Congratulations to both Desert Son and Feynmaniac.
While there are several deserving of the Order of Molly, for October I vote for three:
Lynna for her exposure of the evil of Mormonism.
aratina cage for her concise, witty comments on all sorts of subjects.
Alan B for continuing the Everlasting Thread tradition of teaching geology.

Congratulations Feynmaniac and Desert Son! Sorry, I'll have to skip the new inductees orgy this time, but I will dust off the ol' spanking couch and uncork a new crock of grog. Enjoy!

Congratulations to Desert Son and Feynmaniac!
For this month, I'll go with John Morales, who is long overdue, and Alan B for so much good content.

Sorry I'm late to the celebration. I hope all the champagne isn't gone.
Congrats to Desert Son and Feynmaniac. Much deserved.
Now, as for October, I thought I'd kept a list of worthy posts, but if I did, I don't know where I kept it.
So, I will once again vote for the very worthy and consistently worth reading AJ Milne and John Morales.

Lynna for her depth of knowledge and generosity in sharing it.
aratina cage because I crave the lulz.

Whaddayaknow. I'd actually made notes for October. For your consideration, but for now these are not votes.
Chris Heard
AJ Milne

I had actually thought of nominating PalMD, too (2009/10/supreme_court_justice_scalia_i.php#comment-1986255), but then he went buckfuck nuts over at ERV.

...on the contrary,my newly Mollified friend, penis jokes are actually COMPULSORY when in the club.
Seriously congrats to both, very well deserved and long overdue.
For this month's nominations I vote aratina cage and Rorschach.

In the spirit of George Washington I propose that PZ Myers volunteer to share power with a Supreme Court of Pharyngula (SCP) whose responsibility it would be to pardon and free one person per month from the dungeon. There would be nine members of the SCP. Three would be permenant members (until voluntary retirement) and the other six would consist of the last six Molly Award winners.
Once each month each member of the SCP would announce their first, second and third choice for release. The person released would not be determined by PZ but by instant runoff. Others could suggest release candidates to the SCP by referencing comments that provide evidence of possible rehabilitation but they will not have a vote. Naturally any one released from the dungeon could be sent back to the dungeon by PZ if they continue to misbehave.

Greetings, Feynmaniac and Desert Son, and welcome to the Ordo Templi Mollius. You will need to purchase your own hooded cloaks, and I would recommend paying a little extra for color-safe detergent. As your cloak turns from black to gray, the bloodstains will stand out.
This month:
AJ Milne
Cerberus
Pygmy Loris

And please no voting on troll release.
These are all old trolls who were getting boring anyway (or who started off boring). You may remember the relationship with fondness now, but as soon as they come back you'll remember why you couldn't stand them, and all the little reasons why it could never work.
Have a rebound troll and move on.

There is a reason why people are put in the Dungeon. PZ is generally quite tolerant and gives people ample rope with which to hang themselves.* One has to work hard on getting banned from Pharyngula. Even certain people** who beg to be banned remain free of the Dungeon.
People who spend the time and effort to get banninated should continue to reap the reward they strove so hard to achieve. Once in the Dungeon then stay in the Dungeon. They earned their place and it would be wrong to deny them the fruits of their labors.
*Note to French physicists with "unconventional" biological conjectures, this is an English idiom that has nothing to do with assisted suicide.
**I will not embarrass Anthony McCarthy by giving any names.

I just ran through the dungeon list. I see nobody there who, in my opinion, should be released. If there was a pardon, only once a years. I have no desire to see those trolls again.

If I'm not allowed 2 votas for Lynna then the second vote to Rorschach.

Ed.** "What are 'votas'"?
Alan B Good question, Ed. In my dictionary, a 'votary' is a devoted follower, adherent, or advocate of a person, system, occupation. Bit like the followers of PZ on this site. Maybe something to do with that.
Ed. So it's not you mistyping 'votes' and not checking before you post?
Alan B Certainly not. I don't make mistakes like that ...
** Ed. is my thoroughly annoying alter ego who never makes a mistake and is an all time clever clogs.

and

AJ Milne, again - same reason as last month.
Morales, also again. Although I may never have mentioned it, I've long admired his capacity for introspection and view of himself as a work in progress.

To whom it may concern,
Due to mistaken references to my gender in this thread and similar comments in the subsequent thread, I would like to let it be known that I am not female. Brownian brought up stark facts in The problem of the oblivious white male atheist thread: male Molly winners lead females 31 to 12. If knowing that I am male would have made a difference in your vote for me, I won't take it personally if you change your vote and urge you to do so.
Posted by: Smoggy Batzrubble OM4Jesus | November 23, 2009 3:36 PM
Dear Brother Aratina Cage, please don't think your gender makes the slightest bit of difference to me. While I derive great pleasure from full on female fun and friskiness, it is the principle doctrine of my Church of the Eternal Blow Job that we are all equal in the eyes of Jesus and that it would be arrant hypocrisy to eat part of our Lord's meatstick in the blessed sacrament if we were not also prepared to fellate another feller in His Holy Name. Which is a roundabout way of saying that I'm an equal opportunity voter and an equal opportunity humper. One should be prepared to vote for anyone with whom one is happy to play hide the sausage.
Now, congratulations to Brother Feynmaniac, through whom God has spoken to me. As many of you know, I prayed for his mollification and God heard my prayer. In truth, it is the very first prayer I have ever prayed that God has answered. I was hovering on the verge of atheism, but then God forced you all to vote for Feynmaniac, thus producing a divine mollification and renewing my faith which is once more as young, strong and gushing as a first time orgasm.
Congratulations, also, to Brother Desert Son. Jesus tells me you are looking a little peaky after all that time in the wilderness. Might I suggest that you change your moniker to "Dessert Son" and your sign off to "More Cream"? I can't eat cream myself as I'm lactose intolerant and it turns my feces to liquid, but I'm very fond of large men with mouths full of white substances.
As for my vote! Well I vote for ARATINA CAGE because he's male and this gender discrimination has gone on long enough! And I vote for luscious LYNNA because of the way she can excise the second M from Mormon with such surgical precision (and because she still has my vibrating lingerie and I feel she deserves recognition for achieving the world's longest continuous orgasm). And I'm also voting for JOHN MORALES because I intend to until either of us dies or he gets a Molly, and if you don't like that you can fuck off and worship a banana.
Yours in Christ
Smoggy
