Science is expanding, and with it our vision of the universe. although this new and constantly changing view may not always give us comfort, it does have the virtue of truth according to our most effective resources for acquiring knowledge. No philosophy, moral outlook, or religion can be inconsistent with the findings of science and hope to endure among educated people.

Cephalopod porn: another example of atheist depravity!
Hmmm, a new alliterative simile comes to mind: "Slicker than shellacked squid sperm."
I'll stop now.

Then along comes a sperm whale....
Posted by: Gabby | December 4, 2009 11:16 AM
There's a time and a place for those kinds of depravity, and it's called college.

I always wondered what people got out of tentacle porn. Now I think I understand.

Am I the only one not titillated by this? Sure, it was an awkward moment for all, but after reading your juvenile reactions I'm more sure than ever that Mama and Papa Brownian made the right decision by explaining when I was eight how a breeding swarm made me.
Of course we're not cephalopods, but if I remember correctly the details were pretty much the same: thousands of lithe bodies squirming against each other, water filled with sperm, and the whole thing ending in a Japanese trawler's purse seine.

It's near lunch time in my part of the world and all I can see is yummy tasting calamari. :-Þ

I'm not familiar with squid genitalia, but that looks a little bit 'oral' to me.
Posted by: bbgunn | December 4, 2009 1:16 PM
Not that there's anything wrong with it.

Whaddayaknow: flying squid. This is SO cool! Imagine sailing along, and suddenly catching one of these with your face!

No doubt Incred U will be along to chastise us for contributing to the exploitation of the female squid in this picture.

Wouldn't it be cool if we primates could signal our excitement, etc, by changing colour.
*blushes*
Well, we can a bit, but proper chromatophore skin would be amazing.

If only they didn't taste so good.
Sorry PZ

Oh, I can recognize the opalescent squid on sight! They appear in a whole bunch of documentaries.

Check out the most recent Life documentary on BBC IPlayer (might be UK only) for scenes like this and more.
