These are actually chunks of lung itself being coughed up. I don't understand exactly what it is, but God has healed you right now. Amen.

Lucky for the christians, the science of the internet doesn't clash with their imaginary friend. How convenient, yet kind of unfortunate.

Before the interview with PZ, the man in the podcast expresses a great deal of skepticism toward "coathanger abortions".
He needs to read this article, or look up the relevant medical literature. Risky self-induced abortions are real, and they are a substantial cause of injury and death wherever abortion is illegal.

I always thought Xenophon was an ordinary Greek name. So why do Dany and Fat seem to think his name was necessarily inspired by "Xenu" (who is essentially the Devil of Scientology ) ? I guess ignorance - they seem quite ignorant about Scientology. I recommend they read A Piece Of Blue Sky.

But I'm already subscribed to 16 podcasts! I need an extra 4 hours in the day just to listen to them all!
Seriously PZ, keep up the great work, the more podcasts you can inject some reason in to the better :)

@23 minutes in, Fat Steve fucks up. I know of a woman a few generations back in my family who died from a coat-hanger abortion due to internal bleeding, and there is no reason for me to think I was lied to about it. That really turns me off, but I'll keep listening for the interview.

I see llewelly#3 posted a very informative comment about that ignorant statement from Fat Steve as well. From the NY Times article by Waldo L. Fielding, MD referred to by llewelly:
That's barely over half-a-century ago. It makes me want to reach through the intertubes and slap Fat Steve across the face.Posted by: sikiş izle | December 2, 2009 8:25 AM
Likewise, it should not matter how God created life, whether it was through a miraculous spoken word or through the natural forces of the universe that He created. The grandeur of God's works commands awe regardless of what processes He used.

Not to start a PC/Mac war here, but the errors mentioned by the show hosts for this episode alone seems a tad ironic. The boilerplate text on the site includes both the phrases "Made on a Mac", as well as "Windows users and other cretins click here for the RSS feed". I wonder what they'd call any computer user who factually states erroneous information, like on coathanger abortions and Scientology, and then brag about it.

"The grandeur of God's works commands awe regardless of what processes He used."
And regardless of whether they were created by a god or not.

And what is this "god" creature you speak of, and these things called "miraculous"?
There is as much evidence and reasoned logic to support the existence of deities (and their miracles) as there is to support the existence of leprechauns (and their pots of gold).
You really need a better mental filter regarding those childish notions of reality. Your statement presupposes that deities (and miracles) are real, but thousands of years of history and detailed skeptical inquiry support the conclusion that, not only are those notions probably false, but unnecessary.
Using the mysterious to explain another mystery, explains nothing. It is useless, self serving, and ignorant.

@llewelly & aratina cage: I often wonder if those who express doubt about coathanger abortions ever express doubt about maternal death during childbirth. They sure don't express concern about it, that's for sure.
I once mailed coathangers to most of the South Dakota state legislature, and got one sent back to me with a note asking me if I knew how few coathanger abortion deaths preceded Roe v. Wade. I shot back a question about number of maternal deaths resulting from pregnancy and childbirth, compared to death rates from legal abortion.
Unsurprisingly, I received no response. What is surprising is that such readily available - and relevant - statistics are almost never mentioned in the debate, even by pro-choice advocates.

I must be getting old - those two interviewers sounded like snarky teenagers to me (the male half could tone down his constant chuckling for starters). At least they're atheists who are out there doing something, but PZ's was the only part worth listening to.

Thanks to everyone who listened to the podcast and brought me up on the coathanger issue. I was in no way claiming that illegal abortion was not a problem or a common occurrence around the world, I just inaccurately thought that coathangers were not a common method of illegal abortion. I will Have a look at all the links provided and make a correction on the next available podcast.
