What!? A diverse group of people with different perspectives gathering to civilly discuss matters of agreement AND disagreement? The horror!!! Think of the children!!!1!!

Seriously, Copenhagen was great. Interestingly, for myself, it was the conversations between and after the talks that I found most engaging. Meeting some of the “famous” speakers was a real treat too, but I thought they would be taller.

I also want to give a shout out to Kristjan Wager who opened up his home to a bunch of strangers (strangers in meatspace, anyway). His generosity and trust enabled many of us on a budget to be able to attend. He was a great host and spent a lot of time and energy guiding us around Copenhagen.

As I told PZ, I'm wearing glasses. They block the laser sometimes.

But, hey, at least I'm wearing my Scientific Triassicism T-shirt.

Sili looks and talks like I should have expected, windy differs from my very general expectations, KG and TrineBM were surprises, and while (to my surprise) I managed to get Jadehawk's voice right from the way she writes (lowercase and all), her meatspace equivalent to :-p doesn't involve sticking the tongue out however slightly.* Instead, it's a remarkably toothy grin. :-)

* So I was utterly wrong to adopt it and turn it into the properly nerdy :-þ . Oh well. Even :-月 doesn't work, does it.

I had a similar thought while attending. But having attended a Republican convention and having attended this conference, about the only similarity between the two, I could find, was skin tone.
...
Sorry, I can think of another difference: There were conversations this weekend wanting to encourage more participation/dialogue with/from other groups (idealogically, ethnically, geographically, etc.) I didn't see any of that at the Republican convention, to be sure.

Feynmaniac @28: I bet you good money if you got DNA samples from everyone and checked their ancestry you would have some pretty epic diversity going on. Plus, if you go back far enough, everyone in the picture is really African. That kind of info should make a Republican's head explode, but maybe that's why they stick their heads in the bible so much, pretend they were created bleach white by the snowy-faced Jesus.

#48

Kristjan Wager who opened up his home
Not really surprising, given his online persona over the years, but still charming to read. He'll say, of course, that he feels more than compensated, or something.
I've often been in similar circumstances as a guest, receiving generous hospitality, and whenever I hear such a story, I feel somewhat cosmically thankful. Well, a bit personally, too: spreading sweetness and light does not fall into a void, but ripples.
Besides, if I understood it correctly, wasn't Kristjan responsible for proposing PZ's attendance in the first place?
#49

Every single individual in this babyeating horde is charming, eloquent and somewhat weird. All to be expected.

Which reminds me... Rorschach is one of those people who are mellower and more soft-spoken in meatspace than online. Even though he doesn't look like a teddy bear. :-)

"Should"?

Somehow I had imagined you older and fatter. Not sure why. In hindsight, it's completely obvious I should have expected someone very much like me, only a bit older, and socially awkward in an overlapping but different set of ways.

:) In Jadehawk's photos you've still got the glaring eyes, but instead of red they have an icy blue color, almost like they are being charged in preparation for a major blast.

Strange. I need to look at the photos again. My eyes are supposed to be, you know, green; not "greenish blue" or something, but... yellowish olive maybe.

The one with the closest to icy eyes, BTW, is Jadehawk – gray, but bluish and greenish at the same time; I've never encountered that color before. Well, "icy" doesn't really fit, they don't look cold...

...and not a single one is holding a glass
of beer. Who was on Photoshop duty that weekend?

Beer was restricted to evenings and nights. The photo was taken in the very early afternoon.

my mind blanks on your nym! Help me!

maringo, IIRC.

why do you look so rigid while everyone else is so relaxed?

1) I don't think I've ever put on a fake smile (I don't see the point); and too mild emotions don't necessarily reach my skin – I can basically forget to turn them on. Does look awkward when everyone else in a photo smiles while I have a pokerface even though I enjoy the situation just as much as everyone else...

2) The way I stand in the photo is the closest I can manage to standing relaxed. I'm not one of the many, many people who walk to the left with their left leg and to the right with their right leg, so they only end up walking straight ahead on average. (Do you notice how Jadehawk looks straight ahead but puts her left foot as if she wanted to run into PZ?) When I walk or run on snow or along a beach, my footprints are parallel like most dinosaurs'. In fact, I even like standing on the outer edges of my feet alone, with the legs parallel or even crossed. – Standing for longer than it took to take the photos requires considerable muscle effort and makes my knees hurt as if I had been walking for three hours, but that's another story.

3) I really am "a stroke in the landscape"; I don't need to pull myself together to look like one. Buying trousers is a two-day horror, because my size isn't even carried by most stores. It's the smallest of the long-and-thin ones (European size 90).

it's not nearly as bad, or noticeable, or whatever, as you seem to think. you've got a lot more other far more noticeable features, the nose pretty much disappears.

I really must be 0 on the Kinsey scale, then; I seem to have no clue whatsoever about the female gaze :-D

David, my eyes are also yellow-olive, and your hair is the same color as mine.

That demonstrates something, though I'm not sure what. Yellow eyes are pretty rare here in Texas. In fact, now that I look again, you look remarkably like my late cousin James Carroll Maddux.

I expect we're related somehow.

Looking back at those pics Rorschach has the funniest expression in one, and Windy looks a bit like a friend of mine from highschool and a bit like Kim Deal (when she was younger rather than now).

Burn the heretic!
Trouble is that without the booze it's harder to get the fire going.

Ye Old Blacksmith: You really are a blacksmith?
He is.

And an exceedingly charming and knowledgeable one.

I've got to say that no-one here is how I ever picture them, though I think that's partly that I don't really think visually. It's weird putting faces to commenters, the mystique is almost ruined by seeing them as real people.

You need to all go back to being brains in a vat! (except truth machine because I'm pretty much convinced he is one already)

truth machine did actually once post a link to photo of himself.

I also want to give a shout out to Kristjan Wager who opened up his home to a bunch of strangers (strangers in meatspace, anyway). His generosity and trust enabled many of us on a budget to be able to attend. He was a great host and spent a lot of time and energy guiding us around Copenhagen.

Thirded fourthed!

Everybody's IDed except for the guy in the back in the red shirt
maringo, who almost always only lurks. (Same in meatspace, BTW. He was not heard and rarely seen.)

I wouldn't say that, I saw at least as much of him as I saw of you. But... red shirt? Uh oh. I hope he made his flight without being eaten by some local creature (such as Reptilicus)

So, it's like Godzilla, only with permafrost and without radioactivity?
