We had a lovely day in Oslo. Where were you?

This was taken at a park with a great many statues of naked people. I was horrified to discover that one of them was of me.

In a manner which matches the fortuity, if not the consequence, of Archimedes' bath and Newton's apple, the [3.6 million year old] fossil footprints were eventually noticed one evening in September 1976 by the paleontologist Andrew Hill, who fell while avoiding a ball of elephant dung hurled at him by the ecologist David Western.

One of the Redhead's aunts married a man of Norge descent. They took a trip to Norway a year ago, and traced the family name to an island. Hope you and the Trophy Wife™ don't have to go as far...

Awww... Frogner Park(*). I have so many fond memories of the place.
I spent a lot of my childhood there. Mostly feeding the ducks & geese, playing on the see-saws and playground spin, trying to climb onto some of the statues, and frolicking in the fountain during the summer.
Thanks for reminding me. :-D
(*) I have always and will continue to refer to the place as Frogner Park, not Vigeland-whatever.

Pfft. We do that here. Did you chase it with some sort of fish? The traditional Albertan thing to do would be to have a double-double and a maple-glazed, and then try to destroy universal healthcare while complaining about those Ontario bastards stealing the oil we invented.
But I digress.

@Patricia - you can email me at mattir17 at gmail or look for me on Ravelry (knitinthewoods). I post mostly on Lazy, Stupid & Godless (yeah, I'm an LSG hoar). I got the book and haven't yet tried the pattern, but it seemed sort of straightforward. I'll cast it on tomorrow, do an inch, and then do the heel bit.

The 'V' in Vigeland is a voiced labiodental fricative.
I don't have an ipa font in this comment box (natch), but it looks something like this:
/vi:g/ uh - land
with the first syllable being the one with the main stress.

I'm pretty sure the statue Tis posted is from Switzerland, and I think it's called the Baby Eater. Seriously.
Apparently there are a bunch of weird statues in Switzerland meant to scare children into behaving.
As for what I did today, I baked a cake for my two year anniversary with my boyfriend, and decorated it with buttercream frosting I made from scratch. Then he couldn't even come over and see me and it remains uneaten.

June 17, 2010 2:20 AM
Regarding the "v" in Vigelandsparken, it's actually much more like an approximant than an actual fricative. In IPA it should be [ʋ]. It is voiced though.

June 17, 2010 2:25 AM
Oh, and Haley, the statue Tis posted is in Vigelandsparken.
How to pronounce Vigelandsparken:

I absolutely love Oslo and Norway. If you get a chance, take a long drive out into the country a bit. The drives are spectacular with lots of stunning forests and farmlands, stunning fjords with scary, narrow roads with lots of dark tunnels, and some of cleanest, freshest, best air you will ever experience. I reminds me of the pacific northwest in a lot of ways, the Puget sound, Eliot bay, Bainbridge, Island, the Hood Cannal, etc. are a lot like southern and western Norway in a lot of ways. I would move there if I could. Enjoy it - and don't forget the Aquavit! Skol!

Oslo was the first Scandinavian city I ever visited, on a school trip at 17 (*sigh* Ah, Glynis, I enjoyed the holiday romance, but why did you throw me aside like a used tissue afterwards?), and of course we went to Vigeland, but I haven't been back since. There used to be ferries from Aberdeen to Bergen, but alas, no more.
The "people of Oslo" (I guess that means the city authorities) still send a large fir tree to the people of London every Christmas (it's erected in Trafalgar Square), as a thank you for WWII. Very nice of them, considering what a complete dog's breakfast Churchill made of the Norwegian campaign.

Thank you for an excellent talk yesterday in Oslo! It was very enjoyable, for some reason, considering the fact that the topic was grim creationism :) Hope you had a good time in Norway. Recommend Oslo to Richard Dawkins will you? I also hope you don't think that seventh day adventist guy wining about you lying about him wanting you (and everyone who accepts evolution) to burn in hell, is representative of Norwegians in general.
Cheers.

Ha. So very true. Despite my climatic adventures here, which ended today with 100km/hr gusts knocking down trees everywhere, tearing part of the roof off the pub next door and flinging it across the highway where it lodged in a tree 10 meters off the ground and putting out the power for 7 and a half hours I'm still glad I moved from Alberta to Australia.
