Not only was her comment succinct and accurate, it was the only possible reply that would have sufficiently generated attention. My encounters with college republicans as an undergraduate led me to the conclusion that none of them would have been intelligent enough to pick up on anything less directly worded.

Incredible. The jerks sent an unsolicited email and invitation to a person who is extremely unlikely to respond favorably (a fact they should have known if they had reviewed their mailing list) and they are surprised when she responds negatively? They imposed themselves on HER. She responded reasonably.

It's no different than when someone comes knocking at your door (political canvasser, JW, etc.) or telephoning you (telemarketer, 'charity' soliciters) - it's YOUR door, YOUR home, YOUR phone, YOUR time and privacy. They are imposing, intruding, irritating. She has every right to say "fuck off" and request that they not contact her in the future.

If they used a mass email to everyone on the university system, then they should expect to get a number of "fuck you" responses, especially since they claim that universities are liberal breeding facilities. And that also raises the question about the appropriateness of a private organization's using a public facility like the state university email system for political purposes.

The infantile, sour-grapes comments at the site to which PZ linked tell us all we need to know about the people behind this childish temper tantrum.

I work in admissions at Iowa and have been following this for the past week. It's great to see someone covering it positively for once.

The College Republicans sent out invitations to their coming out week with events including;
1) Animal Rights BBQ
2) Handing out doctor notes for being "sick of stress" so that students can enjoy not working like public employees do

The college Republicans did not have a "Coming Out' week last year, because they got in trouble for a previous event in which they played a game of "Catch the Illegal Immigrant" with Capture the flag rules. One side was the border police and the other were the illegal immigrants.

The thing that really pisses me off is that they sent out the email, fully knowing that the events planned would be provocative to our admittedly large liberal population. Then when a professor responds, they immediately publish the response and yell about it as loud as they can while claiming to be so offended.

The rest of the state of Iowa is filled with religious wingnut republicans, but since we have a few bastions of reason the Republicans need to be able to play the martyr card.

Part of the appeal of the Republican ethos to young men is that hard, in-your-face, fuck-your-spotted-owl attitude. Like Punk 40 years ago and the Yippies before that, it aims deliberately at pressing the squares' buttons.

Having been a College Republican in the mid-90s, I can confirm this statement. Going into school I fell for the right-wing line (shouted loudest by Dinesh D'Souza and David Horowitz) that academia was controlled by Marxist professors who preached anti-Americanism from the lectern and "politically correct" minority student groups who would jump down your throat the instant you didn't use a gender-neutral pronoun or any word that could be construed as " ethnocentric." I went into the CRs as a conservative, patriotic version of the The Deltas from "Animal House" thumbing their noses at the "Communists" who ran things.

In public I heard CRs regurgitate the party line, and then hear them spout the most racist and heterosexist trash while in the privacy of their student-fees funded offices in the student union. Some of the garbage I endured was too much for me, especially when my political attitudes started to change ("See! See! Universities DO brainwash students to favor their Stalinist agenda!!"), and I eventually left during my last few years.

Second, I agree whole-heartedly that it was an inappropriate response... with the assumption that this was a student group on campus (someone suggested that this was not a campus based student group, if that's the case, then all bets are off).

If this was a campus based student group, then she could easily file a complaint as the students did.

Honestly though, there is no correct response to this. Speak the truth "Fuck you Republicans morons" and get filed on. Complain to the authorities and get painted as a whiner or authoritarian.

It doesn't matter, they are experts at spin and, unfortunately, they refuse to be ignored.

They must be opposed and if she plays the game well, this could turn into a major win.

"Paid for by The Sixty Plus Association." That's the tag line to a new TV ad that Republicans hastily put out in response to the fury over the Ryan budget proposal. (Robo calls and mailers in 39 districts go out at the same time as the TV ad.)

You can tell that the ad comes from Republicans because:

1. There's a fake grassroots non-profit sponsoring the ad. (Actually funded by billionaires, per usual, and dropping $800,000 on ad costs like it was pocket change.)

2. The apple-pie-and-mom name is the opposite of the ad's actual goal, which is to strip people sixty years old and older of medicare benefits

3. The ad consists of a roiling stew of misleading statements, outright lies, and submissive-female voices. ("Saving medicare" or "preserves medicare" = killing medicare.)

4. The ad producers are sure that they can buy the opinions of the public (and who can argue with them after they bought Republican Governors and Republican legislators all across this great land).

5. This fake advocacy group for seniors lobbied in 2000 to prevent cheaper prescription drugs from being imported from Canada. Sounds like just what seniors would want all right.

6. Back when we used to be able to see who the contributors were to advocacy associations, 60 Plus' largest contributors were pharmaceutical companies.

Now we are prevented from discovering the most essential piece of information, "consider the source," for judging the accuracy and intent of such ads.

Americans for Prosperity is another fake grassroots non-profit running ads to try to buy escape from hot water for Republicans who voted for Paul Ryan's strangle-the-elderly-the-poor-and-the-children budget. They're running the pro-Paul-Ryan radio and web ads. No donors have been disclosed. The group was funded by one of the Koch brothers. Currently spending about $400,000 to defend the Paul Ryan budget.

American Crossroads and CrossroadsGPS (Karl Rove and ilk) will be unleashing propaganda soon. These are the guys that bought a $750,000 ad package (one month's worth) to attack unions.

Other corporate donors disguised as grassroots humble folks that are trying to rescue Republicans from reality's harsh light include: Freedom Works, Heritage Action for America, and American Action Network. (Players include Wall Street executives: Fred Malek, Isaac Applbaum, Dylan Glenn, Ken Langone, B. Wayne Hughes Jr.) These guys are distributing talking points guidelines for defending Paul Ryan's budget, a budget that eviscerates most of the Wall Street reforms.

A Democratic group is fighting back with robo calls and radio ads, but they have spent $6,000. The disparity between conservative ad buys and progressive/liberal ad buys looks like a joke, but unfortunately it is real. The House Majority Pac spent more, about $100,00. So, we have $106,000 up against about $1,950,000 from Republicans -- and that's just the money we know about, and that's just this month.

It seems odd that no one here has realized that the filing of a complaint based on the school's anti-harassment policy is itself a gesture intended to tweak liberal sensibilities. It is a conservative contention that such school policies are not equally enforced, but instead are used to suppress speech and support favored viewpoints. The point of the complaint isn't to gain satisfaction, it is to demonstrate that the school should not have a policy under which the "FUCK YOU, REPUBLICANS" response is actionable.

It seems odd that no one here has realized that the filing of a complaint based on the school's anti-harassment policy is itself a gesture intended to tweak liberal sensibilities. It is a conservative contention that such school policies are not equally enforced, but instead are used to suppress speech and support favored viewpoints. The point of the complaint isn't to gain satisfaction, it is to demonstrate that the school should not have a policy under which the "FUCK YOU, REPUBLICANS" response is actionable.

I don't think many people missed this aspect. To make that point in the real world and not simply in their rhetoricized imaginary world would require that the complaint be actionable in the sense that it has actual disciplinary results and that a fully comparable case be found in which a similar response to a similar email from an equivalent organization was complained about under the policy with no or unequal action taken.

Bet ya dollars to donuts the professor's intemperate and ill-advised reply will be used against the University. And, I'm afraid it may be used effectively by Republicans campaigning against effective higher education, and denouncing the state university as a den of radical extremists.

I don't know what your experience with universities is, but mine tells me that many students arrive at Enormous State Universities from families which have sent no one to college before, families which have no inkling of what universities are [other than places that grant degrees that lead to jobs, they hope] or how they operate or what they do [if they're good ones]. If I were [Flying Spaghetti Monster forbid!] a Republican strategist in Iowa, I'd already be planning to use her outburst. And I'll bet more it's brought up in the next higher education funding debate in the Utah legislature.

And were I, for my sins [Flying Spaghetti Monster help me!], a university administrator, I don't think I could devise a way to defend the professor's "Fuck you" email to a student group to the families of students, to voters in general, or to state legislators. Nor would I try.

She did indeed hand them a tool. Whether they wield it effectively remains to be seen. But she stuck a few more arrows in their quiver, so to speak. Something Iowa universities, Iowa Democrats and the people of Iowa absolutely did not need to have happen.

I was tempted to write this very same message on facebook a few weeks ago. It is just so frustrating to watch half the country behave like children. Obama is very much a moderate—pretty much an early 90s moderate republican—and yet we have senate minority leader Mitch McConnell saying his number one priority was to prevent a second Obama term! How productive!

The sheer absurdity of the right is becoming unbearable—Palin, Bachman, Trump, 'birthers', tax breaks, climate change, Texan rain dances, etc.—it is hard to resist...how else might one deal with this ludicrousness...other than...Fuck You, Republicans.

There once was a famous comedian, whose name I can't precisely recall but I reckon it may have been Lenny Bruce, who said something along the lines that we, society in general that is, use 'fuck' in the wrong way.
It should not be a swear word or term of abuse, or an insult.
Basically he reckoned that being fucked, getting fucked, having a fuck etc, was a very pleasant enjoyable activity or at least, presuming consent and all that, it should be.
So telling someone to 'get fucked' is actually wishing them to have a good time and engage in a desirable enjoyable satisfying activity.
He illustrated his point by making an imaginary phone to his mother, making some chit chat and then wishing that she would 'get fucked' as a term of endearment.

So can I suggest that you change the words aimed at your Republicans [I'm an Australian so I'm not a candidate to do so] to fit the sentiment more precisely?
Something like:
"Fall in a pile of shit!!"
"Eat snot!!"
"May your chickens grow into emus and kick your dunny down whilst you are using it".
"Don't get fucked!!"

I agree 100% with the sentiment of Prof. Lewin's response, and recognise that the College Repugnants' reaction has been predictably childish and mind-numbingly insane, but flatlander has a point I have to agree with. She gave a group of scumbags who are desperately looking to tear down smart liberal people exactly what they wanted, and she should have known better. If I was in her position of course I would have done exactly the same thing, particularly in light of their behaviour in previous years. All of that doesn't excuse the fact that she should have taken a deep breath and thought better of it. If someone is looking to beat you up really hard, you don't offer them your ass and a baseball bat.

I don't know how old you are, but i hear that commonly from young activists and it's wrong. Just watch an episode of Mad Men, or pick up a newspaper from that era. We have made ENORMOUS progress in just a couple of generations. There is much to be done, and there probably always will be. But it's important to keep a clear vision and perspective - Alinsky et al. also emphasize that.

Okay, as a University of Iowa student, it is an incredibly liberal place. Like, it's weird for me to hear someone is a Republican - it just doesn't happen.

Huckabee had a book signing on campus, and the only people that I could see that were legitimately excited/actually there for the intended purpose of the book signing were older people from the community.

And in general, Iowa is a swing state. We were red in 2004 and were blue in 2008. Don't throw us in with the bible belt like that, you'll make me sad :(

Personally, I have found that a good "Fuck you!" can help in an argument, especially over politics. It does several things:

1. It clarifies your emotional state.
2. It helps bring aggressive subtext into the open, where it can be dealt with effectively.
3. It sometimes provokes the person or persons with whom you are arguing into expressing their emotional state, as well.
4. When followed up with an ironclad argument, it often helps rattle the person or persons with whom you are arguing, causing them to rethink their own arguments.

I have seen all of these results (though never at once) after using a good solid "Fuck you!"

Yes, ray, those words do have clinical meanings. But the only one of them in current and common use especially in the general society to specifically refer to the truly developmentally disabled is "retarded."

In other words, there are many REAL PEOPLE who are disabled, have to deal with what that means every day, have had that word used on them and have been hurt by it NOT because they are being stupid, or voting for someone we don't like, or rooted for the wrong team, but simply because of WHO THEY ARE, and who they cannot help but be.

The fight over the use of the word is NOT a dictionary fight, it's a fight about not having society keep insentively hurting and marginalizing and stigmatizing a disadvantaged minority.

It's a fight about decency and compassion.

The other words are problematic to some, but that use of "retarded" cannot be in any way argued to be archaic or obscure enough to not do actual harm to many real people.

And MR is not just low IQ (anything below 68-70, depending on who you talk to, because some put the start of MR at 68, and classify 68-75 or so as Borderline Intellectual Functioning), it also must significantly impair daily functioning and occur prior to age 18.

There are plans to change the terminology to intellectually disabled in DSM-V in whatever century they finally finish the damn thing.

Developmental Disability is an umbrella term that encompasses not only mental retardation but also Autism, Down Syndrome, FASD, Fragile X, epilepsy, cerebral palsy and other disorders--it's not just used to indicate something that delays development, but also to indicate something that occurs during development.

Yes, you might view "coming out of the closet" as an unfortunate phrase, but its use predates current vernacular and means "to talk in public about that which you kept secret in the past" ... no mention of G/L/B or political affiliation in that definition. I can be a closet liberal, a closet philanthropist, or even a closet conservative.

It would seem that you are trying to hand wave away the reasons why LGBT people have and still do stay in the closet. That is because one can be shunned, assaulted or killed by being open in the wrong situation. That is the current and most popular meaning of being in the closet. "Gay" meant what it means and "coming out" parties were what they were for a long time before homosexuals coopted the words and tortured the concepts. The words and their meanings were there before there were activists, so if you don't like that some people know those things, that's just tough.

Some of you may be reasonably clever: come up with your own words, like some brand-name with no prior meaning. Then you can claim ownership and priority and a righteous indignation on your special word's misuse, instead of acting as thieves complaining when your stolen goods are taken back.

Here's an idea. Pick a word with no English meaning, but an exotic spelling from a foreign language such as Arabic. For example, "q'ir" comes to mind. You'll have the advantage of no prior meaning so you can set it up with all the connotations you want, and its implied etymology carries with it a high probability of much more succor than you apparently believe you receive in this country.

Googlemess, you don't know what you're talking about. When I "came out" I did not know that southern belles had their own coming out parties. I did not come out to be confrontational to southern belles; I did it to maintain my own sanity. After coming out I went to gay men's discussion groups for a few years. In them, nobody ever claimed to have used used the phrase "coming out" specifically to be confrontational.

That said, it seems clear to me that Republicans think it's important that gays be taught a lesson about appropriating other people's words. Apparently the best way they can think of to do this is to appropriate those words for themselves and be confrontational about it.
