Charles Kuffner is the latest to note that people would rather watch football with Obama than McCain. As always, they try to delve into the reasons:
"I think he'd be fun to sit back with and hear his experiences, all his stories," said Kyle Ferguson, 28, a Republican from Santa Rosa, Calif., who picked McCain. But reflecting a sense some voters have of McCain based on the complaints of a few Senate colleagues, he added warily, "I bet he'd probably get pretty angry and lit up if his team was losing."
The temper isn't the real issue, though. You see, it's all about the leagues.
McCain is from Arizona, so if you were watching football with him, you would most likely be stuck watching the Arizona Cardinals, and, really, who wants that? Yeah, fine, the Cactus Wrens are 2-0, but the wins have come against San Francisco and Miami. That hardly counts. If not the Cardinals, you'd probably have to watch some other NFC west team, and they're all pretty bad at the moment.
Obama, on the other hand, is from Chicago, and the Bears play in the NFC North. Now that's a little more like it-- sure, the Lions are putrid, and the Vikings have no quarterback, but the Bears managed to upset the Colts, and the Packers are looking good. The choice of who to watch is clear.
The contrast only gets starker when you include the running mates-- Palin is from Alaska, where they play hockey instead of football, and real Americans can't even find hockey on cable. Biden is from Delaware, which is between Philadelphia and Washington, in the heart of NFC East territory. Now that's a football conference.
So, there's your choice: vote for McCain-Palin, and get the Cardinals versus the Niners plus "Hockey Night in Canada," or vote for Obama-Biden, and get Cowboys-Eagles and Bears-Packers, not to mention the defending Super Bowl Champion New York Giants.
I think we can trust the American people to make the right decision, here.

McCain's not originally from Arizona, either. And the joke wouldn't work if it were comparing the quality of football in Hawaii to the quality of football in the Panama Canal Zone.

Actually the joke would still work.
The University of Hawaii has had a fairly decent college football team the last few years, although not really a match for the top teams. Strong offense, questionable defense, lots of high-scoring games (IIRC).
As far as I know, the Panama Canal zone does not have a college football team.

Why the assumption of NFL football? What would have been better this weekend, ASU vs Georgia with McCain or Northwestern vs Ohio with Obama?

That's rich, coming from a rugby player. I want to see what happens when you say that in Minnesota. I'd have thought that y'all are far enough north that hockey would be a serious feature of life in your neck of the woods.
