Seasonal Food Mystery

Why is it that you can buy apple cider all year round, but apple cider donuts are treated as a seasonal item, and only in stores for a week and a half in October?

Happily, these people make them year round, and they're available at the Schenectady Greenmarket. And they're awesome. Mmmmm.... cider donuts.

If all "green" activities came with cider donuts, I'd be a lot more environmentally conscious. Somebody work on that.

Agreed that cider donuts are the best.

Maybe not in the summer, but you can get freshly made cider donuts most of the year at local Riverview Orchards in Rexford (just a couple miles up Riverview Road from the Rexford Bridge). You can even watch them being made by the "donut robot."

Apple cider donuts are a very slow-growing fruit of a rare and hard-to-grow tree. In the Northern Hemisphere, they they to ripen in about October. Harvesting must be done speedily but with considerable care since they easily crumble. Around harvest time they are devoured by numerous creatures; it's not unknown for an entire orchard to be stripped bare in the space of a few hours. And shipping the fragile fruit is expensive.

Why can't you buy a coat in the winter time or swim trunks in August!!!!!

Great tip on the donuts. Too bad you have to go to Schenectady to get them (/Albanian ducking...)

Huge numbers of flats are planted in northeastern greenhouses, but donut seed germination rates are dreadful across all species. Yankee frugality then digs up non-viable unsprouted seeds, dries them until crisp, and sells them as such.

Because otherwise my entire family would become obese, very, very fast.
