He received a BS and a MS in Biological Sciences from Stanford University -- where he spent most of his time drinking heavily and building vegetable catapults instead of learning information that would now be eminently useful. When he is not failing terrifically to perform his sworn duties, he enjoys watching bad movies, ethnic food, and running.

Pure Pedantry is a blog about science -- social sciences and otherwise -- as well as academic and scientific culture. No one can live on science alone, so I also like to dwell on pop culture, periodically explore the humanities, and indulge in other types of geeky goodness.

We Win! US sets record for new Chlamydia cases

Category: Public HealthSex

Yay us?

More than 1 million cases of chlamydia were reported in the United States last year -- the most ever reported for a sexually transmitted disease, federal health officials said Tuesday. "A new U.S. record," said Dr. John M. Douglas Jr. of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

More bad news: Gonorrhea rates are jumping again after hitting a record low, and an increasing number of cases are caused by a "superbug" version resistant to common antibiotics, federal officials said Tuesday.

Syphilis is rising, too. The rate of congenital syphilis -- which can deform or kill babies -- rose for the first time in 15 years.

"Hopefully we will not see this turn into a trend," said Dr. Khalil Ghanem, an infectious diseases specialist at Johns Hopkins University's School of medicine.

We win! We win! ...Wait, what did we win again? Oh right. Urethral discharge.

People, they are called condoms. They are neither expensive nor complicated, and they have an added bonus of you never having to have this conversation: "I am having your child then...wait, what was your name again?" Use them.

But condoms are evil...EEVILL

Or, as Mr. Eloquent Bush likes to say, "And, you know, hopefully, condoms will work, but it hasn't worked."

And, ladies--using condoms means never again having to lay in the wet spot!

The radical right wing of America has long been anti-abortion (at least since the '76 election). Over the last 20 years or so, anti-birth control has become a part of it (which I don't get (birth control and sex-education reduce abortions (and the people who are against abortions are against birth control and sex-ed?))). It is not about reducing abortions. It is not about sex, even. It is about punishing people for having sex. Condoms reduce (by a large margin) unintended consequences of sex (including, but not limited to, disease, infection, and, eighteen years down the line, having to come up with $80,000 for college) so of course the radical right hates them.

Query: Do the radical right republican evangelicals who are having sex with male prostitutes while campaigning against gay rights use condoms? Or is that an image nobody wants.

re MrsWhatsit: Not really. It won't prevent vaginal lubrication from soaking into the mattress. Has anyone done a study on natural female lubrications in terms of amount as compared to male ejaculate? I think men may be getting a bad rap here.
