Retrospectacle: A Neuroscience Blog

The trials, tribulations, and joys of a Neuroscience gradute student writing her thesis in the postmodern, post-Y2K world.

Profile

me%20and%20pep.jpg Shelley Batts is a Neuroscience PhD candidate at the University of Michigan. She studies hair cell regeneration in the cochlea, and is just embarking on that quixotic quest called 'thesis.' She lies awake at night pondering how science intersects with politics, culture, policy, money, medicine, and religion in an attempt to be more than just a niche scientist sitting in the oh-so-lovely ivory tower. Follow me and my parrot on the quest to get funded, get a PhD, and stay sane.

Ironic and Funny Headlines Abound Today

Category: Blather

Bush says "Congress worst in 20 years." All irony meters simultaneously explode. I just imagine Bush and Congress embroiled in a "No, you are!" "Noooo, you are!" "Nooooo you are times 10!" "You are times infinity!" - type battle of (COUGH) wits. That lasts about 10 minutes and they settle the fight with an emotional game of rock, paper, scissors, after which it is never spoken of again.

Cradle of humanity finally to teach evolution! The South African president finally decided to make teaching evolution a priority in schools. "Well, someone finally told me that what this theory is, and actually, Africa is quite the star of the story! Plus we've got all these old bones and fossils lying around so we might as well make use of them." Although I exaggerate, the actual article is, in fact, much, much more depressing.

Catholics decide they don't like Britney. What, so that music video from a couple years back, when she was in a whorish Catholic uniform asking to be hit, wasn't enough? Britney responds that we all might like her better if we didn't test her for drugs anymore.

Dumbledore is gay, so what? Have the fundies run out of *real* people to condemn for their sexuality and feign scandalization over?

The USA spent over $43 Billion on 'intelligence' last year. Hmmm, thats funny, I thought the NIH budget was half that.....

Theft of virtual sex toys in Second Life results in real lawsuit. So apparently its not a good idea to go around stealing people's virtual couches embedded with sexcode, cause they'll miss them and get mad. The plaintiff's name is Stoker Serpentine....

If there were any Democrats with balls in Congress, they would say that Bush is the worst president in 154 years.

And then apologize tearfully after the Republicans call them big meanies? The Democrats are as tough as as anyone, Karl, but you ask the impossible.

I'm surprised thad BillDo put down his hot pics from the Folsom Street Fair long enough to think of some other way to waste his time.

evidently they did long ago, considering the "Murphy Brown" scandal hyped up by our then illustrious VP, Quayle.

demonizing fictional characters with fictional characterizations has long been a tradition with evangelicals.

not surprising, when you think just how far from reality their dissonance has gotten them.
