me%20and%20pep.jpg Shelley Batts is a Neuroscience PhD candidate at the University of Michigan. She studies hair cell regeneration in the cochlea, and is just embarking on that quixotic quest called 'thesis.' She lies awake at night pondering how science intersects with politics, culture, policy, money, medicine, and religion in an attempt to be more than just a niche scientist sitting in the oh-so-lovely ivory tower. Follow me and my parrot on the quest to get funded, get a PhD, and stay sane.

Shelley Needs Help!

Category: Announcements
Posted on: October 8, 2007 12:57 PM, by Shelley Batts

I need help! No, not that kind (well, ok, maybe...).

I am one of 20 finalists for a $10,000 Student Blogging Scholarship, and the only thing standing between me and a scholarship I could use towards my PhD (and to pay off undergrad debt too) is votes. Yes, I need you to vote for me, so won't you?

Pretty please?

You can vote for me here!

And if you REALLY want some excellent karma, you might encourage your readers or friends to pitch a vote my way. I'm up against some extremely high-traffic blogs, and don't stand much of a chance without your help. Pepper and I thank you!

No fair, you won LAST year!

Well, okay, runner-up, but still...

Actually, I'd vote for you again this year anyway, but it turns out I'm also in the running. And I could really use a microscope...

As someone who's been reading your blog for a while, though, I can at least say there will be neither surprise nor injustice if/when you do win this year. Good luck!

What's in it for me?

Chimpanzees and game theory

Me and Pepper thank you!
Me and my grammar teacher are appalled.

Posted by: Tegumai Bopsulai, FCD | October 8, 2007 3:00 PM

Heh, I can't resist a damsel in distress, I guess.

Posted by: Warren | October 8, 2007 3:08 PM

It looks hopeless. Grant Brisbee is doing quite well, I think maybe he got all his sock puppets to vote for him.

Posted by: Tegumai Bopsulai, FCD | October 8, 2007 3:18 PM

Wow, what a downer! You realize that this voting goes on for a month don't you? Jeez!

Posted by: Shelley Batts | October 8, 2007 3:23 PM

"Pepper and I thank you."

Posted by: Charlie (Colorado) | October 8, 2007 3:37 PM

Blogger does do trackbacks, but that should help.

Posted by: Charlie (Colorado) | October 8, 2007 3:57 PM

Thanks Charlie! PZ also threw me a link. All much appreciated. :)

Posted by: Shelley Batts | October 8, 2007 4:37 PM

Good luck! I bet you win. I'll bet $10000 that you win! Um, well, maybe not. I bet 10000 neurons that you win!

Posted by: Homie Bear | October 8, 2007 4:38 PM

Good luck! You have my vote!

Posted by: Nick Anthis | October 8, 2007 4:39 PM

Good Luck! Is anyone making "Vote For Pepper" t-shirts?

Posted by: Eric | October 8, 2007 6:15 PM

DOOD! What a fantastic idea! You, dear sir, rule.

Posted by: Shelley Batts | October 8, 2007 6:16 PM

You have my vote. Good luck!

I don´t know your idiotic American school system where it is the money and not the brain to decide if you get an education. Waste of talent.
In my country school are free, except for some of the books.
And then we get paid 1000$ a month for rent, food and so.
Anyway. some day I might even be able to write in English. For free!!!
Ps. I don´t know if it is unfair but I voted for you from the other side of the world. CB.

Well, you got my vote...UoM is the in-law family alma mater.

Pushing 50 here, and went back to get my business undergrad not long ago. Had to get the science prereqs that I'd avoided so many years ago.

Thing is, I love science...just not very good at it. But I do read enough to know that the work you're doing is important...and yer a hometown girl! Good luck, and adding you to the bloglist.

Well, even if I didn't really love the neuroscience of ADHD, with my brother threatening painful death, I'd vote for you anyways.

You seem to be doing quite well thus far, hope it holds out...Gotta love being a science blogger about now, I imagine.

Posted by: DuWayne | October 9, 2007 2:30 AM

So I've admonished all eight or nine of my readers to vote for you*. Does this warrant another good ADHD or even better, a bipolar post?

*I did add some creative tags and the name of my blog puts me high on a lot of google searches. Yeah, abortion is an odd tag for this, as is rights, but you have a right to win, right? Still can't figure abortion in, but what the hell.

Posted by: DuWayne | October 9, 2007 2:59 AM

Done -- you've got my vote, and my link. Expect a surge in your vote total when my readers chip in. Both of them...

Posted by: Sam Wise | October 9, 2007 9:31 AM

Is this a Chicago-style election? (vote early, vote often) What are the rules? How often may I vote for you (from each IP address I control)?

And in case I forgot to ask, what's in it for me?

Posted by: Tegumai Bopsulai, FCD | October 9, 2007 12:19 PM

Thank you all that have voted and posted so far. I'm actually doing quite well and there's only a few hundred votes or less between the top few blogs.

Tegumai: Only one vote per IP address (and no proxies, cause thats not fair!). Whats in it for you is the continuation of free information and a picture of a very very happy Shelley. Oh, and Pepper gets fed. :)

A possible "Vote For Pepper" shirt. Make sure you look at the back: http://www.spreadshirt.com/us/US/Create-t-shirt/Designer-59/shop/117728/basketitem/1817770

Oh, and Pepper gets fed. :)
Fed to what? Lions?

Only one vote per IP address (and no proxies, cause thats not fair!).
Don't worry, no proxies involved.
