Real life dragon discovered

Neatorama reports the discovery of a real life (albeit tiny) dragon!

While participating in a herpetology study we stumbled across this female laying eggs in a nest. She was found in the Lambusango Forest reserve and was immediately released after this photograph was taken.

Neatorama notes it could be related to Draco volans. No word yet on whether it breathes fire, hoards gold, or kidnaps fair maidens.

I spent a lot of time with Operation Wallacea in Sulawesi – here’s one of my Draco photos – lots of other good critters there too. Giant centipede my favourite for pure badness.

From the other picture at the site, those wings clearly aren’t attached to the arms. I guess those struts in the wings must be ribs.

Why “discovered”?” I guess it may be a new species, but it sure looks like genus Draco, which is certainly well known. “Real life dragon discovered” seems to imply to me a whole new type of “dragon-like” lizard.

I find this very interesting. I wonder if there is more of its kind out there in the forest. These dragons are very interseting creatures and I would like to see one up close.

Kinda looks like a mutation or pherhaps just a new speices has it eveolved? Kinda looks like a butter fly and a lizzard but its quiet imposible for them to mate so how did this speices come up radaiton mutation? Mayby those wings are used for jumping smaller scales and gliding between plants and trees?

Stuffs like this make me think dragons were real and lizards and stuffs now are descended from the big “hollywood version” dragons. Plus, scientists found that this one types of dinosaur could have possibly breathed fire, or something like fire. O.o

Excuse me if I’m ruining your fun, but I find it offensive that some people take advantage of people’s belifs, and I’m not trying to hurt anyone’s feelings, but I know a little girl of the age of 11, and she wants to become a Dragonoligist. Now, she gets bullied all the time because she belives that she has a Dragon called “Knuckles”. If she read this, she’d get really happy, and if she finds out it’s fake, shame on you people, shame.

actually it’s not worthy of the name Dragon, it’s to small, the wings are different, it’s doesn’t fly, it doesn’t breath fire and doesn’t contain magic power X-D.

    Just joking…nice animal though!

Three Strikes should just be abolished that along with mandatory sentencing these laws have not done anything but overcrowed prisons and keep the guards with job security, and were paying for it. Hopefully if it is put on the ballot again the voting machines won’t be tampered with like in the last election, where the found that the diebold machines were supposedly not working right!!!! And also the one they should get rid of is Matt Cate who has done nothing but collect a pay check!!!

This is for all this people that doesn’t believe in dragon. You guys need to search more. Dragons not necessarily need to spark fire. Also whoever said is imagination or fake go ahead, there’s more evidence out there that the government don’t want to tell you for not to make everybody alarm, but evidence is there. Just like the UFOs, is happening and many sightings is around the world that USA can’t.cover nomore. And for GOD’S creation there’s no exception. Do u know that the estimate life for dragons are in about 1,000 years old to a 10,000 years? So what u guys think? We can live a couple years but not that longer. You will be surprised how many things we /jcan find. Look at the dragon that they found in Romania or Mexico. Don’t go so far, if labs can successfully made a glowing cat, I wouldn’t be surprised if someone comes with a real dinosaur which is in near future. Another thing ; we try hard not to battention to all those movies out there, they always say something behind ( example of it could be the movie. Contagion ) whatch my word that in 4 to 10 years is going to have a serious spread. ( OR THE MOVIE ABOUT THE TERMINATOR. I KNOW FOR FACT THAT BY 2026- 2030 they will be our enemy)So I’m so sure that this dragons do really lllfllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllpl

it is a real lizard type creature, it can’t fly it glides, all i know about this creature is it climbs into birds nest’s to lay it’s own eggs after eating bird eggs then when they hatch the babies have the food already there. That’s pretty much all i know about this creature i have no clue of the name but it is a lizard not dragon but very cool indeed.

    December 6, 2011

To people saying it’s not a dragon: It’s a dragon if enough people say it is. Names are funny like that. That and coming from genus Draco and all. Dragons even in myth aren’t all huge either, or has nobody seen a certain Eddie Murphy-voiced miniature Lung in a certain Disney cartoon? Anne McCaffrey’s firelizards? Or perhaps the numerous explosive creatures in Pratchett novels.

Perhaps you saying that the mandrake plant isn’t a mandrake because it doesn’t scream when you pull the roots up?

Wonder what people make of snapdragons?

Rose–Well said. I appreciate and share your concerns about an imminent robot apocalypse. Once humans have been wiped out, do you predict some sort of war between dragons and the terminator-type robots over what’s left of the earth? If so, which side do you believe will triumph? Might the genetically engineered glowing cats play some small, but in the end, decisive, role?

All the best to you and yours this holiday.

It’s likely to be a Beccari’s gliding lizard (Draco beccarii), native to the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia.

Pray tell WHY must people automatically discredit anything that falls outside their limited scope of existence? Had scientists listened to all of those types of naysayers, we never would have things like penicillin, automobiles, steam engines, airplanes, skyscrapers, metal ships, and so on. Naysayers used to believe that elephants & gorillas were myths! Not everything is Photoshopped!! Just because some dork with Photoshop can create all sorts of goofy things does not mean everything that’s unique & different are Photoshopped. I’m certain many of you morons believe we never went to the Moon too! If you believe that, I have a bridge to sell you.

I don’t understand why people deny the fact that they were real. An indigidouse species that lived during the TRIASSIC era, not Jurassic. YES. They were a dinosaur. YES, they could fly, BUT, they had an advantage. just because we cant find fossils of them does not mean they didn’t exist. Everyday something new is discovered, only deeper within earth or in an area where nobody looks most of the time. If they had wings, then that means migration was in effect. If they had wings, that means they could easily get away from a catastophic disaster. for example= the extinction of dinasaurs. if an asteriod did indeed kill them off, not all of them were killed, and the dragons had an advantage. They could fly. They could get away from that. There’s just to much evidance written in STONE on cave walls or in historical texts of them existing during the medieval ages. CHINA worships them, why?? look at the land, the geography. Nice and mountainouse for them to hide. high up where no one bothers them. But they were a majestic creature to the chinese. They were beutiful creatures. As well it’s quite possible that they could breath fire. A natural bodily chemical and a strong esophigial lining is all they’d need. Look at these animals that can emit chemicals from their body to ward of preditors. Bugs that do the same thing. who says they didn’t do it to. Saying their not real is just like saying aliens or ufo’s aren’t real. REMEBER- if you think man is the only living thing in this universe, YOU ARE DEAD WRONG!!!!!! AN INFINITE SPACE AND WE ARE THE ONLY THING IN IT, BOWLSHIT!!! BOWLSHIT, BOWLSHIT, BOWLSHIIIIIIT!!! WAKE UP AN LOOK AT THE PICTURE PEEPS. Say what ever you want! call me a lier. i don’t care, i’m standing my ground. WHY? because i know that i’m right and you know it to but your just to stubborn to realize it! 🙂 Good day 😉

Because fossils have not been found does not mean they never existed, all though near the brink of possible extinction, man once again came through to finish them off. Since they were a “Deaity” in China, it’s quite possible if not the truth that no remains would be found due to that very belief. The skin, the teeth, all parts of the animal, bones included, were used in some sacred and or religiouse way. As for early renditions in Eastern Europe scattered yet highly feared making them the ideal kill/off. Why no remains there? well perhaps in speculation, not enogh to go around. Therefore remains were thrown into the ocean or used to heat with such as fat, bone, synu, etc. If they were reptiles, then their skin could have been used to make sheilds, weopons, etc. But our stupidity does not seem to see that. Do a DNA test on ancient discovered skin mande shiels. As well, did they come over here? possible, the Indians made not of winged creatures, were they carnivorouse, i doubt it due to the land that they chose and the moutainous terrain of which in that case meant alot of trees but no animals due to the lack of oxygen and extreme temperatures. Dragons being big creatures could survive that.
Not only that but no one has actually been to the very top of every mountain to take a look. We cant survive for hours at a time excavating land to fing them. Hypothermia, exhaustion, lack of oxygen. It can’t happen. REMEMBER THE LAWS OF ADAPTION.That tiny little thing could be a decendant or a fluke of nature. You never know. That thing is a lizard, dragons were lizards, dinosaurs were lizards. And look at this, birds are not decendants of pterodactyls. A bird like dinosaur with no wings but had feathers and look how evolution changed that. Evolution could’ve changed the dragons to a reptile that we know of today when we are really looking at a flying giant that lived and is still living today right in the face. REMBER the horse. at first it was no bigger than a cat then BANG, it towers over man today.

so they existed. No doubt about it. They were a dinosaur to if you looked at it, who knows whats really deep down in earth, another earth like world full of prehistoric creature and things we don’t even know of like that movie, “Journey to the center of the Earth”. Face it. You can’t deny it. Theres just to much evidance.

If only I weren’t sworn to secrecy, you guys would be SO surprised…..
Lol joking aside, I want to point out a few places that people have misunderstandings of what dragons are. Not all dragons breath fire. Take the frost dragon for example – it has particles of ice mixed with its breath. Next I want to point out that not all dragons fly, either. Even in fantasy these things hold true. Take the landworm for example. It has no wings or anything else to enable it to fly. Now I want to address the protest that it is a lizard, not a dragon. To this I say, think before you speak. It’s similar to saying a rainbow trout isn’t a fish because it’s a trout. A dragon is a kind of lizard. Yes, some people disagree with this and say that while they are reptiles, they are not lizards, but most people agree that dragons are, in fact, lizards. I found a paper on dragons recently, which would probably have quite a bit of significance in this conversation. If I can find it again I will post the link.

Ouw, ouw.. It’s a long time I didn’t see this reptile. I often see it around my house when I was a child. It’s called “Angui” in our local language. Hope I can see it again someday.
    Thank for sharing, Frank 🙂

However much I wish it were a dragon, I must say it is not. A dragon would have talons and the creature obviously doesn’t eat copious amounts of meat. But it isn’t Draco Volans. their wings are extended higher than their ribcage around their shoulders. this is just adaption of something like a skink that got eaten a lot and took to the trees. look at the wings. they aren’t membrane, they are scale and dragons would have a point halfway across the wings where bones would span the wing. Everything you people write to support this lizard is based on books. there is no possible way, due to basic physiology that this could be a dragon however much we want it to be. There are no talons or any fighting apparatus. People who believe, this isn’t your dragon, but hang in there.

I just got this book called Discover and draw DRAGONS, and I discovered that there was dragons all over the world, so i wonder if that is a real dragon, or it’s just a toy put together like a dragon.
