Infant Siamang Apes Walk Like Humans

Category: Evolution
Posted on: December 11, 2007 3:17 PM, by Karen Ventii

A new video by evolution biologist Aaron Filler, MD, PhD, medical director at the Institute for Spinal Disorders at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, provides striking evidence that infant siamang apes walk like humans.

This evidence, along with new information from the fossil record and from genetics, supports an upright bipedal ancestor for both the apes and humans. By showing that the upright bipedal body form of humans evolved before the knuckle-walkers (like gorillas), it promises to push back the date of the first human to 21 million years ago.

Dr. Filler has written about this in the book "The Upright Ape: A New Origin of the Species". In fact, Afarensis wrote a great review of the book.

Here is part 1 (of 3) of the video from YouTube. The other parts can be found here.

The data has recently been accepted for presentation at the American Association of Physical Anthropology's April 2008 meeting.

The video can also be seen on Google Video, in medium resolution as a Podcast on iTunes and in high resolution on Vuze.

Interesting video. As someone who believes in both God and evolution I imagine I will hear about this some more in the future. I have Christians who want to call me an ape for believing in science and visa versa. I wonder if the good Doctor will end up coming up with a species name just for my group! LOL!
