A few notes on our summer programming

Category: blogginggoal setting
Posted on: May 27, 2008 1:19 PM, by SciWo

It's the day after Memorial Day - time to admit that it's summer. Time to resign myself to well-meaning neighbors who ask: "So, are you teaching this summer or do you have it off?" And it's time to let you all know about my summer plans. No, I don't "have it off" this summer, but you already knew that. (I am, of course, doing research for most of the summer. My goal is to get two papers submitted, a student launched on his/her MS research, and at least one more proposal written and submitted. I also need to write the labs for my new prep.)

With the shift in responsibilities, comes a shift in the day-to-day schedule. All through the school year, I tried to post at least three times per week and I had a little alarm that reminded me (as if I needed it!) on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Often I posted more frequently, and I considered these "bonus posts." This summer I am going to try something different. I am going to restrict myself to 2-3 posts per week, on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and/or Saturdays. I've got an ambitious work agenda for the summer, but I also want to spend as much time as possible with Minnow, and that means that I am trying to limit my hours at work (which is where I do most of my blogging).

So here are my self-imposed summer blogging rules:

  1. No more than 2-3 posts per week.

  2. Post only on Tuesday, Thursday, and/or Saturday.

  3. Posts composed mainly of a single link will be considered exceptions.
  4. >
  5. Mommy Monday is on indefinite hiatus.

  6. I will not feel the need to post while I am traveling. I'll be gone for a week in June and almost all of July. Fortunately, Alice will be able to provide posts during those times, despite her busy travel schedule.

  7. Guest posting (under my real name!) on someone's -ology blog is encouraged at a frequency not >1/week.

My hypothesis: Post quality will increase with the reduced frequency of posts. Navel-gazing whining will decrease commensurately.

But I'm not sure whether to count this as my post for today!

I am so annoyed when people ask me what I am doing this summer! WORKING, just like everybody else!

Or maybe I will get a part-time job at the mall to make ends meet. Is that what they think?

Good luck with your work plans! The last research meeting in my department was half of people speaking of research and half of people (including me) saying "well, the teaching is over, I can go back to research properly! Stay tuned..."
