International acaDemic Writing Month is the academic's answer to NaNoWriMo, National Novel Writing Month. It was originally created by StyleyGeek as International Dissertation Writing Month, but because so many of us who had already finished our degrees were interested in a little challenge, the D was loosely interpreted as acaDemic. This means that you can write your dissertation, a book chapter, an article, a grant proposal - anything goes, as long as it is academic.
The festivities are being ably hosted, once again, by Dr. Brazen Hussy. To participate, all you need to do is sign up. And like all good challenges, there are prizes for the winners. Cocktails, to be specific.
Below the fold, you can see what's on my plate for the month. Plus, a bonus picture of Minnow "in costume."
After promising myself all summer and fall that if I just got through October, I'd be on the downhill slope for the year, I find myself facing another steep ascent to make it through my already-committed tasks in November. So it's a good thing that InaDWriMo is here to help.
I hereby commit to:
- Finishing my last 2008 grant proposal by November 10th. Work remaining is ~5 pages of writing, budget stuff, etc.
- Starting and completing major reviewer-requested revisions to a paper by editor-imposed November 27th (Thanksgiving). This requires some new data collection, revisiting some data analyses, and majorly restructuring some of the arguments in the paper. By the time the paper is returned to the journal, I'll probably have several revised figures, one new figure, and ~7000 tightly, rewritten words.
- Completing most of the data analysis for my AGU poster. The conference isn't until mid-December, but I'll need some time to actually get the poster organized. This one definitely does have to happen, but I feel much less confident that I'll be able to complete the analyses on deadline for InaDWriMo.
I'm not sure how to make a tracker for these tasks, other than to report back as major components are completed. I'll probably try for Saturday updates on-blog as suggested by Dr. BH.
Finally, for those of you still reading, I present the "refused to wear her ladybug costume, so Thursday afternoon Mommy ran to Target to get orange pants, painted some paper green and attached strips of it to a hat, so that she could be a carrot...but refused to wear the carrot hat and belatedly decided to wear a previously-refused witches hat" "orange witch" Toddler.

Regardless of the costume, cute as a button - and so grown-up! Good luck with all the writing projects. You know, I should sign up for that; external oversight can be a good thing sometimes.

Great idea Sciencewoman! Thanks. I've started too. Since I'm revising already written chapters, I'm keeping track of the number of revised words. I liked to cool picture from one of the meters. Although right now it's set to "tv watching" because there's college football on tv. At least the game will be over soon. Once hubby comes home this evening, and I return from a quick trip to the lab, I hope to set that to actively writing mode. Good luck with your goals.

Minnow looks adorable! I cherished the fact that monkey had no idea what halloween is, therefore this is probably the last year that he'll let me choose what he is.

I'd never heard of this before! I might have to participate, just in an effort to get as much done as possible before my next committee meeting...

Wow, Minnow got big! Bummer I'm not going to AGU this year -- it'd be fun to meet in person. Goodluck on the whole 'downhill slope'. :-)
