Can you name the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World?
(Neither could I. To refresh your memory, they are, in chronological order: The Great Pyramids of Giza, The Hanging Gardens of Babylon, The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, The Statue of Zeus at Olympia, the Mausoleum of Maussollos at Halicarnassus, the Colossus of Rhodes, and the Lighthouse of Alexandria. Phew!)
The famous list was composed by Philon of Byzantium in 200 B.C. Could it be time for an update?
The New7Wonders foundation thinks so. In 2001, Swiss-born Canadian filmmaker, museum curator, aviator, and explorer Bernard Weber created a website where any visitor could vote for seven new(er) man-made marvels, including Angkor Wat in Cambodia, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, and the Sydney Opera House.
Cast your vote soon—the online, phone and SMS polls close at midnight GMT on July 6th.

Coming up with seven new wonders is a lot trickier than it was for old Philon since he pretty much limited himself to the wonders of the known world (and there is some question whether the Hanging Garden of Babylon ever really existed). Nowadays, we have the entire world to draw from and hundreds of possibilities.

i recently heard that the statue of liberty is at the absolute bottom of the developing list. another case of disenchanted new yorkers expecting that everyone appreciates their city's symbols as much as they do :)
