The Cure for Planetary Amnesia
Jennifer Jacquet is a Ph.D. candidate with the Sea Around Us Project at the UBC Fisheries Centre. She works closely with Dr. Daniel Pauly, who coined the term Shifting Baselines, the syndrome on which this blog focuses.
Josh Donlan is a conservation scientist and a Visting Fellow at Cornell University. He often hides out in the backcountry of the Teton Mountains, pondering bygone giant beavers and ground sloths. He also is also the founder and Director of Advanced Conservation Strategies and has a habit of restoring remote islands.

June/July 2008: Josh Donlan attends training for his Kinship Conservation Fellowship in Bellingham, WA.
May 2008: Josh Donlan is an author on a new paper in Ambio titled High impact Conservation: Invasive Mammal Eradications from the Islands of Western Mexico.
May 15, 2008: Jennifer Jacquet reviews Bottomfeeder: How to Eat Ethically in a World of Vanishing Seafood at the Tyee.
April 2008: Trade Secrets: Renaming and Mislabeling of Seafood by Jennifer Jacquet and Daniel Pauly is published in Marine Policy.

Is it just me or was Earth Day nothing special? Judging from this article, Earth Day Goes Political and Corporate, I'm right (unless you think planting an elm tree is going green). Maybe it's precisely beacuse Earth Day went political and corporate it no longer means anything...or maybe every day is Earth Day.

I agree that Earth Day doesn't mean much now. I didn't even notice it had happened.

The biggest thing it left me wondering about is "Where's the beef?" for Al Gore. The 60 Minutes segment on him a couple weeks ago made it sound like he was going to rock the nation on Earth Day with his $300 million campaign. And then I ran around and told everybody, "You better watch out, my hero Al Gore is gonna kick your ass on Earth Day." And then ... whut? Where are ya, Al? Actually, I just looked at your www.wecansolveit.org website. Um ... is that all you got for your money? yikes.

I was a little taken aback when an elderly couple commented to me that I was riding my bike to work for Earth Day. I ride my bike 6 miles to the university EVERYDAY, even in snow and rain. So to me, earth day is everyday, while Earth Day has no meaning. And certainly at Penn State no one gave a shit.
