I’m not someone who gets as excited about science-fiction space shows as many other science bloggers, but I am a fan of the current Battlestar Galactica and, especially, of Star Trek: The Next Generation. But there’s one man who stands out as the hero of Star Trek: TNG, and it’s the seasoned, savvy, courageous and confident Captain Picard:

Now Patrick Stewart is one cool guy, but he’s nothing compared to the starship captain he played. Back in 2001, a band named Dark Materia made a techno song about Captain Picard called The Picard Song, and for me, the combination of bad techno, sound bites, and random inside references make this song a hilarious classic. Dark Materia is cool enough to post their song for free, and I’ve got it here for you. Enjoy!

Wow, Ethan, this is great! It’s in better taste than the Wookie song and has a catchier rhythm too. Speaking of Picard references in songs, the rock band The Refreshments had a minor hit “Banditos” on their 1996 album Fizzy Fuzzy Big and Buzzy. The chorus of the song refers to Picard. The lyrics are: “So give your ID card to the border guard. Your alias says you Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Of the United Federation of Planets, ‘Cause they won’t speak English anyways.” You can listen to it here:

If Chewbacca lives on Endor you must acquit. The defense rests.
