party

Have you had a chance to see this video from Discovery News showing the flashy 'disco clam'? A graduate student at UC Berkeley, Lindsey Dougherty, unraveled the mystery of this party-like effect. The clams actually have tiny silica spheres (340 nanometers in diameter) on the inside of their lips that reflect light whereas the outside of their lips is devoid of nanospheres. This is a rather unique method to put on a flashy show in the ocean as other creatures of the deep use bioluminescence whereas these clams just unfurl their lips to reflect the ambient light in the ocean around two times…
Okay, occasional readers, friends, and former students, the date is official. I walked over to Ozzie's, chatted with one of the waitresses (a Garfield grad, no less!), talked with a manager on the phone, and we're on for the party. You can find us on Saturday, Sept. 27th at 4 pm in the upstairs mezzanine at Ozzie's. Address: 105 W. Mercer St., Seattle, WA 98119 Dave Bacon will be there (I don't think he's related to Kevin, but here's your chance to ask, and we could start a new game! Six degrees of David Bacon!). Grrl Scientist will be signing autographs. And, we'll get a chance to…
Readers, Friends, Enemies, Members of the Press! My mildly authoritarian brother and I would like to remind you of the life-changing event we're throwing on Friday, September 26th, in San Francisco at Tonic. The party starts at 9pm and goes until ?. (That's right ladies, you read me correctly, it goes until "?"). EXCITING ANNOUNCEMENT #1 - Million Comment Party - Our Zooillogix Key Party happens to coincide with ScienceBlogs' Million Comment Parties everywhere! Have all of you heard about the one millionth comment contest that ScienceBlogs is having? This contest is in honor of the upcoming one million reader comment that will be left sometime around the 25th of October (unless PZ has another crackergate before then). In honor of this upcoming one millionth reader comment to the site, ScienceBlogs is holding a contest where all readers who leave comments (accompanied by a valid email address so we can contact you) are eligible to receive a fabulous prize: a trip for two to New York City and exclusive science adventures that only ScienceBlogs could…
It's long overdue. Time for a Zooillogix writers, friends, and lowly readers party. On Friday, Sept. 26th, we will be having our get together at Tonic, in San Francisco, starting at 9:00PM. We think it will be fun to see what weirdos (that's you!) come out of the woodwork. At worst, Ben and I will get quite drunk alone. Actually, that's not true. At worst one of our readers will be insane and will knife us. But either way, we are forging ahead with this plan. Craig from Deep Sea News will also be there and there is a good chance that some of your other favorite science-type bloggers will also…
