Abel Pharmboy is the nom de plume of David J Kroll, a US state university educator and cancer researcher who holds a PhD in Pharmacology and Therapeutics and BS in Toxicology. He writes on natural product drugs and dietary supplements, issues of under-represented groups in the STEMM disciplines, science and medical journalism, the science and culture of North Carolina, Florida, and Colorado, making and listening to music and, with the help of his colleague, Erleichda, wine appreciation.

Much hoo-hah in the local fishwrapper regarding the installation yesterday of Dr Holden Thorp as Chancellor of the state's flagship university, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (installation address here). Thorp has brought a large degree of enthusiasm and optimism to Chapel Hill with his numerous and diverse accomplishments to date as well as his vision and youth - he has turned 44 during the time between his appointment and installation yesterday.

My scientific colleagues at UNC-CH have been giddy with Thorp's appointment as he is himself a scientist: his appointment is in the Department of Chemistry and his primary area of research expertise is transition-metal redox chemistry of nucleic acids. Thorp has also served as Director of the university's Morehead Planetarium and Science Center. Come to think of it, I actually wrote a half-decent post on the gentleman a little while back and here is his official biography.

Anyway, I just wanted to bring to the reader's attention that Chancellor Thorp has launched a blog, and a pretty dang good one at that. Beginning on 29 September, Dr Thorp began chronicling his travels across the state and singing the praises of all who are contributing to education and the mission of the university system. No, it's not a science blog (yet) - but it is written a scientist and really focuses on education and careers.

And, as I learned from his most recent post, you've gotta love a top administrative official who keeps his musical chops well-honed.
