Tetrapod Zoology

Amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals - living and extinct

Profile

Naish-pterosaur-model-150-px.jpg Darren Naish is a science writer, technical editor and palaeozoologist (affiliated with the University of Portsmouth, UK) who mostly works on Cretaceous dinosaurs and pterosaurs. He also studies such things as the swimming abilities of giraffes and fossil marine reptiles. An avid interest in modern wildlife and conservation has resulted in many adventures in lizard-chasing, bird-watching and litter-collecting. I've been blogging since 2006 and a compilation of early Tet Zoo articles is now available in book form as Tetrapod Zoology Book One. Additional recent books include The Great Dinosaur Discoveries and Dinosaurs Life Size. For more biographical info go here. I can be contacted intermittently at eotyrannus (at) gmail dot com. PLEASE NOTE: I am now completely unable to keep up with email correspondence. I do my best to respond to all queries and requests, but please don't be offended if I fail to reply. I blog from and about conferences - please contact me for more info. Follow me on twitter: @TetZoo.

The science of Godzilla (teaser)

Sorry: this is one of those annoying teaser posts that lots of people hate me for, but I wanted to post it in order to advertise what's coming next (I'd post it now if I could but I don't have the time). And I promise that the article is, within the context of this blog's theme, going to be relevant. Please check back soon. The vampire bats can wait a bit longer. And to those of you that know Godzilla, you'll know that he's done an awful lot of evolution within recent years (and I'm not talking about the 1998 TriStar Godzilla).

For everyone who can't wait for Darren's scholarly take on the Big Guy, may I recommend the classic site Barry's Temple of Godzilla? It's worth it just for the disclaimer, which notably states:

And no, I am NOT a Gamera fan. Godzilla is a giant mutated dinosaur, whereas Gamera is just a big turtle who flies by spinning around like a top and spewing flames from his arm and leg holes. Godzilla is a fearsome, awe-inspiring and majestic creature who can destroy an entire city all by himself; Gamera, on the other hand, is "the friend of children everywhere"

Glad we got that sorted out.

Hey, but then, so is Stalin.

Nuts to that! Teaser posts, tantalizing lists of upcoming topics, and frequent digressions aren't problems. They're features.

Rock on, Dr. Naish. Rock on.
