Tetrapod Zoology

Amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals - living and extinct

Profile

Naish-pterosaur-model-150-px.jpg Darren Naish is a science writer, technical editor and palaeozoologist (affiliated with the University of Portsmouth, UK) who mostly works on Cretaceous dinosaurs and pterosaurs. He also studies such things as the swimming abilities of giraffes and fossil marine reptiles. An avid interest in modern wildlife and conservation has resulted in many adventures in lizard-chasing, bird-watching and litter-collecting. I've been blogging since 2006 and a compilation of early Tet Zoo articles is now available in book form as Tetrapod Zoology Book One. Additional recent books include The Great Dinosaur Discoveries and Dinosaurs Life Size. For more biographical info go here. I can be contacted intermittently at eotyrannus (at) gmail dot com. PLEASE NOTE: I am now completely unable to keep up with email correspondence. I do my best to respond to all queries and requests, but please don't be offended if I fail to reply. I blog from and about conferences - please contact me for more info. Follow me on twitter: @TetZoo.

The author caricatured. His trusty steed: a babirusa!

It turns out that Martinus van Tee of Caricature a day (and of martinus van tee illustration) is a big fan of Tet Zoo, and obviously of babirusas too. Yes, here's me, Flintstone-style, riding a familiar artiodactyl. Have I written about babirusas on Tet Zoo? - - I can't remember.

Thanks indeed Martinus, truly I am honoured. In real life, remember that babirusas need help: they are threatened by illegal hunting and habitat destruction on Sulawesi (visit Babirusa.Org for more).

Watch out for those tusks! They could do you a mischief if your steed stopped suddenly.

Splendid!

Are you crossing a remarkably spherical hill, or have you grown so great one can actually see the curvature of the planet?

For some reason this reminds me of a homage to that picture of a caricature of Darwin riding that giant beetle...or that Megatherium.

Very green - though I can imagine the Police giving you a few odd looks as you rode your Babirusa down Charing Cross Road...

There's a caricature of Charles Darwin riding a beetle all right, but AFAIK not of him riding a Megatherium; are you perhaps thinking of this 1873 caricature of Richard Owen?

(However, a live babirusa is a much cooler steed than a ground sloth skeleton, IMO. Probably more comfortable to ride, too.)
