Thoughts from Kansas

You will notice that it lacks definiteness; that it lacks purpose; that it lacks coherence; that it lacks a subject to talk about; that it is loose and wabbly; that it wanders around; that it loses itself early and does not find itself any more. --Mark Twain

Random Ten

Category: Chatter
Posted on: June 20, 2007 4:19 PM, by Josh Rosenau

It's been a while since I did one of these:

"Crush On You" by Bruce Springsteen from the album The River (1980, 3:11).

"Carrot Juice Is Murder" by The Arrogant Worms from the album Gift Wrapped, The Best of the Arrogant Worms (2002, 3:29).

"Might" by Modest Mouse from the album This is a Long Drive for Someone With Nothing to Think About (1997, 1:31).

"Fooled Again (I Don't Like It)" by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers from the album Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers (1976, 3:51).

"Brain Damage" by Pink Floyd from the album Dark Side Of The Moon (1973, 3:50).

"Vegetable" by Radiohead from the album Pablo Honey (1993, 3:12).

"Open Your Eyes" by Minus Story from the album The Captain Is Dead, Let the Drum Corpse Dance (2004, 4:51).

"Death of an Interior Decorator" by Death Cab For Cutie from the album Transatlanticism (2003, 2:56).

"Where Did You Sleep Last Night (Live)" by Nirvana from the album MTV Unplugged in New York: Nirvana (1994, 5:05).

"What You Want" by My Bloody Valentine from the album Loveless (5:33).

I think iTunes wants us to beware of murderous, shoegazing vegetarians.

Josh,

I wonder why intellectual types have a need to provide music suggestions (with links).

A UFO documentarian I know and a former newspaper columnist create vast lists of music they love for readers of their blogs.

With music being a subjective thing, how can one person's preferences impact another's?

(No blogger I've come across ever suggests classical pieces.)

I love Radiohead's "Creep" by the way.

I don't think it's just intellectual types, and a Random Ten is less about recommendation than an exploration. I'd have to look back through my archives, but I'm pretty sure that classical pieces have turned up in my Random Tens before, and I know that jazz, klezmer, Afropop turn up periodically.

As for the links, how else could you hear the pieces?

Josh,

I wasn't trying to be pejorative; just making an observation or two.

The links are truly welcome, and I've used a few for "Creep" to make a point for the media persons we write for.

I love your blog, and the suggestions, so forgive my seeming
negativity.

Rich, sorry if I seemed snippy. The Hamas post has brought a lot of criticism of my intellectual side (for whatever reason), so I was feeling touchy. The origin of Random Tens is lost in the mists of time, but the question is indeed a worthy one.
