Thoughts from Kansas

You will notice that it lacks definiteness; that it lacks purpose; that it lacks coherence; that it lacks a subject to talk about; that it is loose and wabbly; that it wanders around; that it loses itself early and does not find itself any more. --Mark Twain

Get ready for World Turtle Day!

May 23rd, according a random email I got today, is World Turtle Day. One presumes that it is supported by a turtle, which is itself supported by a turtle, and so on, all the way down. Either that, or it is a day to celebrate the inversion of dinghies....

More Pesach goodness

Kara explains: In the story of Exodus, we learn much about the story of Passover, which involves shank bones, lice, blood smearings, and unpleasant stale crackers, much like the nurse's office in elementary school.Ma nishtana?...

Happy Poetry Month!

April being National Poetry Month, I'll let you entertain yourself with this poem by Robert Frost: War Thoughts at Home On the back side of the house Where it wears no paint to the weather And so shows most its age, Suddenly blue jays rage And flash in blue feather. It is late in an afternoon More grey with snow to fall Than white with fallen snow When it is blue jay and crow Or no bird at all. So someone heeds from within This flurry of bird war, And rising from her chair A little bent over with care...

Muskrat queen

Congratulations to Dakota Abbot, this year's champion muskrat skinner, and the new Miss Outdoors: "Oh my God!" a boy in the audience yelled, at the sight of a woman in perfect makeup with her hand inside a muskrat. Then, from another part of the crowd: an older woman's voice: "She's good." I wish Ms. Abbott the very best of luck in her pursuit of a marine biology degree. She's clearly well-qualified. While you're at it, check out the video of the event. Hat tip to: Digital Cuttlefish....

Happy Pi Day!

Mmmmmm pi. Inexplicably, this is not a paid holiday at NCSE, but we do consume copious volumes of pie (including pizza), so it all works out. My contribution is strawberry-rhubarb. King of pies. Discuss your favorite pie, pi, or pie-blogging in the comments....
