If you have not yet figured out why you shoud not be using terms like "hard science" and "soft skills", then you absolutely need to read Telling Stories About Engineering: Group Dynamics and Resistance to Diversity in NWSA Journal v. 16 No. 1, 2004 (Re)Gendering Science Fields.

You should also read They Blinded Me With Science: Misuse and Misunderstanding of Biological Theory, an excellent critique of Thornhill and Palmer's nonsense about rape as an evolutionary strategy. You can find it in Burack and Josephson's must-read tome, Fundamental Differences: Feminists Talk Back to Social Conservatives.

Defeat Rick Santorum!

Category: Ask a Science BloggerMinistry of Science and Culture
Posted on: November 3, 2006 11:44 AM, by Zuska

What's the most important local political race to you this year (as a citizen, as a scientist)?...

Dear god, please save me from Rick Santorum...oh wait. Is that a bit strange, to be praying for relief from Mr. RightWingChristianFundamentalist? Mr. EvolutionIsEvilNaziPropaganda? Mr. WomenShouldBeInTheHomeAndPregnant? Mr. ILiveInVirginiaButIWantPennsylvaniaToPayForMyKidsEducation?

Last year I moved from Kansas and thought with great relief, "No more Sam Brownback as my senator!!!" Of course, coming to Pennsylvania, I just exchanged him for Rick Santorum.

However, there is the very real chance that he will be defeated this year by Bob Casey, Jr. It's not like Casey is the liberal of my dreams. But he's at least not Rick Santorum.

Casey spoke to students at Penn State yesterday about education and global warming. Santorum continues to beat the war drum.

"Mein Kampf means struggle; jihad means struggle,'' the Republican said as he compared the current geopolitical scene to the years of allied inattention before World War II.

Let us struggle to free ourselves of Rick Santorum. If you live in Pennsylvania, please go vote against him and his xenophobic, hate-filled, theocratic vision for our country. He's bad for women, bad for science, and bad for our government. He supports elitist government policies that cater to corporate donors and fringe fundamentalist leaders. Under his leadership, we would see a more callous government that shirks responsibility for people's concerns. He's supported the tax cuts for the wealthy that have led to the reckless increase in massive national debt while letting social and environmental concerns just languish.

I want a representative, responsive, and responsible government. Rick Santorum can only prevent our government from operating in that manner. It's time for him to go.

Thanks to Bill Scher of Liberal Oasis for the talking points. Read his book, Wait! Don't Move to Canada: A Stay-and-Fight Strategy to Win Back America. Great post here on the midterm dynamic. And an update here.

Thinking about Santorum makes me think of Dan Savage, writer of Savage Love.

He's been trying to get the man out of office since 2003. His campaign to smear Santorum's name (in the most literal way possible) has made the senator an, ahem, household name.

He's campaigned in other ways too (illustration NSFW; scroll all the way to the bottom for relevant section), of course, but I'd say the neologism is his most famous (and probably most effective).

Santorum was so hated by sex-columnist Dan Savage that he had a contest to name something disgusting after him, and get it into mainstream usage. I'll let you google that one.

And, if you really want to scare the crap out of yourself, then google the story about what him and his wife did with their dead baby. No, not making this up.

Here's the dead-baby story: http://www.refuseandresist.org/culture/art.php?aid=2001. I read it last week; it is truly disturbing.

Good luck getting rid of Mr. Oppression. My parenatl units are trying to oust George "Capital Idiot" Allen for us; Mr. Scientist and I are working the Midwest and Northeast. I've got my fingers crossed!
