New England RNA Data Club Today!

Category: Lab Life
Posted on: May 15, 2007 9:22 AM, by Alex Palazzo

Wow, what a week. I finally submitted my paper to PLoS Biology and we finally got our RNA Data Club up and going.

This event/series was conceived in a drunken state at a happy hour about 1&1/2 months ago and now has become bigger then anyone of us originally imagined.

When we pitched this idea around there was much enthusiasm followed by fears from some who were worried that many research groups would not want to share their data due to the fact that the RNA field (and RNAi in particular) is so competitive. Well after we sent out a call for prospective presenters (postdocs and grad students), we got an incredible response and now have enough speakers for the next 3 meetings (if we keep the 3 talks/meeting format). We sent out a call for sponsorship and got a great response from the local biotechs especially from Alnylam. For tonight's inaugural meetup, it looks like we'll have >100 attendees from all over New England who work in both academia and industry.

Now lets hope that my talk goes off well ...

You'll do great. Looks like there will be a good turn out, and hopefully next time I can attend.

These kinds of multi-lab group meetings are an outstanding opportunity for post-docs and grad students to get experience delivering seminars in front of a friendly, yet critical, audience.
