Dr. Judah Folkman - (1933-2008)

Category: Science & Society

Read it here.

Fortunately, I was able to see him give a talk, just a month ago. Unfortunately he will not get a Nobel despite creating a whole field of research while going against the paradigms of the day.

Click here to watch an episode on Nova dedicated to his research.

Update: Orac has this nice tribute.

Prior to his proposal in 1971 that targeting tumor angiogenesis (new blood vessel growth that tumors induce from the surrounding tissues in order to supply themselves with oxygen and nutrients) could be an effective new strategy to treat cancer, the idea that tumor blood vessels were an important component of how tumors grow and metastasize was not appreciated.

The above is from Orac's post. That was great work he did. This field is appreciated now! I TV show about it the other night!
