The Minds

shelley Shelley Batts is a Neuroscience PhD candidate at the University of Michigan. She studies hair cell regeneration in the cochlea, and is trying to finish that quixotic quest called 'thesis.' She lies awake at night pondering how science intersects with politics, culture, policy, money, medicine, and religion in an attempt to be more than just a niche scientist sitting in the oh-so-lovely ivory tower. Follow me and my parrot, Pepper, on our quest to finish my PhD, land a post-doc, and stay sane.

steve_icon_medium.jpgThe Omnibrain is a psychology graduate student at an online university. He hopes that the three weeks and $29.95 that he is spending on his Ph.D. will get him a job at a Tier 1 research university. Do online universities have postdocs? Ok...just kidding, he is really a Ph.D. Candidate in Psychology studying high level vision. You know... stuff like scene & object perception.

small%20pepper.JPGWhile not an official contributer to 'Of Two Minds,' Shelley's sidekick is an African Grey parrot named Pepper. His heros are Irene Pepperberg, Alex, and Rachel Carson. He spends his time learning Mandarin and writing the Great American novel.

A Psychologist walks into a bar...

Category: Psychology

cow_tipping.jpg

A very shy guy goes into a bar and sees a beautiful woman sitting at the bar. After an hour of gathering up his courage, he finally goes over to her and asks, tentatively, "Um, would you mind if I chatted with you for a while?"

She responds by yelling, at the top of her lungs, "NO! I won't sleep with you tonight!" Everyone in the bar is now staring at them. Naturally, the guy is hopelessly and completely embarrassed and he slinks back to his table.

After a few minutes, the woman walks over to him and apologizes. She smiles at him and says, "I'm sorry if I embarrassed you. You see, I'm a graduate student in psychology, and I'm studying how people respond to embarrassing situations."

To which he responds, at the top of his lungs, "What do you mean $200?!"

I'm not even sure I chuckled at that one. Maybe someone else will?

Initial response, half a chuckle that's more of a Hmm. I recognise that it's supposed to be funny, but don't really find it all that amusing. A polite half-laugh, I suppose.

I know it's supposed to 'only be a joke', but it lacks internal consistency. Would a very shy guy who takes an hour to work up the courage to talk to a beautiful woman, and who subsequently slinks back to his table hopelessly and completely embarrassed really respond in such a manner to the woman's explanation of her behaviour?

And then there's the slut-shaming element that bothers me.

It's a weird joke -- like Stephen D Moore says, the punchline doesn't quite make sense. It's one of those jokes where you know what the joke writer was trying to do, but the punchline comes perilously close to being a nonsequitur.

Not to mention it's far too easy to take the shy guy's response as not so much an instance of slut-shaming as simply an emotional crackup. Either way it comes down to the intent of the joke being obvious while it fails to actually deliver.

I thought it was hilarious and well-deserved. But, realistic? No. However, since when are such jokes supposed to be realistic? He said the kind of thing all we shy guys would just love to say if (1) we hadn't been so flustered and (2) we could have thought of it in time.

this joke perpetuates stigma and discrimination against sex workers.
