Desire is a great friggin’ album, and this is one of the better songs, but I never knew about this cover. A shout out to my buddy, whose musical tastes might run in another direction.
I always thought that that particular song and some others on “Desire” and “Blood on the Tracks”,seem like ideas for screenplays or short stories. All those visually evocative descriptions, emotional metaphors, strikingly terse dialogue…. and then there’s the *music*.About a month ago,as I was driving around some “missionary town”(Sonoma, actually)one of these gems came on the radio,(of course,I knew every word)it so utterly *fit* the landscape, the history of the place,he elucidates the western mystique in his own inimitable way. (Oh, and Jack White ain’t bad.)
