Profile

PalMD is a practicing internist in the Great Lakes region of the U.S.. Aside from the great joy he finds in his family and his work, he likes communicating some of that joy to others. He has a special interest in the ways patients---and we are all patients at one time or another---are deceived by charlatans. He aims to change the world, one reader at a time. Previous writings can still be found here, and here. I also write twice a month for Science-Based Medicine

BMI TMI update

Category: Medicine
Posted on: October 14, 2009 10:40 AM, by PalMD

I'm very worried about the change in seasons, and about eating in response to stress. I'm starting to worry that I can't do this. My sleep patters are terrible, due to work. It's hard to eat better when you don't feel well and you're used to treating mood with food.

The good news is that despite my backsliding this week, I'm down to 201#. Yeah, it would have been better if I hadn't eaten a bunch of chocolate gelt (CostCo, Belgian, nut-free). Still, my overall change in habits is gradually paying off.

I was down to 215 one day last week after completing a 5K run, but 216-218 seems to be about where I'm sitting. A change in weather and in my experiments' schedule has kept me from getting as much as excercise as I need, so even my reduced caloric intake is just not doing it now. The slightest indulgence in terms of food is still pushing me over, and I'm not sleeping very well either. I'm not looking forward to more days when I get to work in the dark and come home to more dark.

getting weight off is easy. keeping it off is the really hard part. i've dropped 30lb in the last few months but I won't be impressed for 5 years. if I keep it off then I'll have a party to celebrate, but frankly, for fat people to remain thinner is nothing but a pain in the ass. our heredity makes it a constant challenge. as winter approaches I am readying my studded bike tires. how sick is that? :)

The cold weather is absolutely horrible. you feel like eating more just to feel full and insulated. I have an electric blanket that im hiding under sadly. My hands get too cold in the fall weather.

Its I guess our hibernating instincts

I lost 15 lbs this spring/summer and have grumpily put back on four of them. Must. Kill. The. Fat. It's the weather. I know it is. It went from 60 to snowing overnight. What happened to my autumn walks in the leaves? I blame global warming.

Hey PAL, you (and some other folks) motivated me to join Weight Watchers. I hate it. I hate life. I'm down 2 lbs, and I'm on week 3.
