Catherine Shoichet, a reporter at CNN, is reporting on a unique (as far as I know) public health intervention. For a few bucks, a randy Switzer can have a three pack of condoms delivered by bike in one hour.

How cool is that?

But then what happens if the delivery guy is hotter than the guy in your bed? Arrange for a second delivery?

Sure would work in Kansas, with the distances involved, waiting for the bicycle messenger is the same as "abstinence only".

I remember reading somewhere that in some areas (I seem to remember DC as one of them) a woman carrying more than one condom can be arrested for prostitute. If that's accurate, then it wouldn't work in those areas.

Also you'd need a car for Kansas rather than a bicycle so the public health benefits of reduced HIV would be partially offset by the increased risk of tropical diseases expanding due to global warming.

What kind of trouble would I have gotten into for the 1500 condoms I used to haul around DC when I was a volunteer health educator, I wonder. I can believe it though--DC didn't get the highest HIV rate in the country by accident. In any case, I have been a volunteer health educator in DC relatively recently, and if I had run into a DC cop while carrying one of my giant boxes of condoms, I would have just handed him or her a couple of condoms, just like I would any other DC resident, because that's why the health department gave them to me. I think I did once or twice.

As for gas, I think driving to buy or deliver condoms is still worth doing but for the record, I took Metro most of the time :)

I should probably mention that the ad I saw for condom delivery in Paris isn't a public health measure, just a capitalist reaction to the news from Switzerland. But hey, if the swiss inspire our épiceries to start delivering condoms, cool. And I thought Americans specialized in capitalist ingenuity...

In that it'll take at least 45 minutes for them to get over the embarrassment of not having planned ahead enough to have a condom already there, an hour's probably about right. The Swiss hate being caught out without defensive measures in any situation.
