I am not ashamed to admit that I have a crush on Martha Stewart. I mean, come on: with those luscious locks, knitted ponchos, freshly baked cookies, and that home in the Hamptons, what's not to love?
Apparently, even cybergeeks love her. This week, Martha will go where Bob Villa hasn't gone before: the cover of Wired magazine, icing a--get this--Wii cake.
Aside from the fact that the words "buttercream" and "fondant icing" have now been printed, in ink, in Wired, and aside from the fact that, well, the cake looks like a Wii console (only tastier), there is another peculiar feature of this cake.
You can't eat it.
Apparently MARTHA, as in the baking guru Martha Stewart, as in the mastermind behind the Martha Stewart Living empire, has made a cake that tastes, as the recipe says, "like old Atari cartridges." Also, there are so many sticks holding the thing together that you actually risk injury by eating it.
Martha, Martha, Martha. I would expect a faux pas like this from an amateur, but not from you. Why waste your time baking a cake that you can't eat when you could waste your time playing Wii instead?

I revel in the irony of a Wii, a machine sold without depending on having the latest greatest super useless graphics, is immortalized in a cake that's all appearance and no useful content.

I'd be so much more impressed with both Wired and Martha if this cake was edible. I still can't figure out why she/they/whoever went through the trouble of mixing and baking the cake when they could have just made the structure out of cardboard (or, Lego).
Maybe because a cardboard Wii would be...useless.

Listen, we're still talking food here ... take away the sticks (labour intensive, but worth it for food!) and you still have cake. It doesn't matter what it looks like b/c it's being shovelled into mouths anyways, just the way it tastes. Mind you, if it does taste like an Atari, I'd be disappointed b/c, trust me, they don't taste too good! DScholar, knock'en the Wii's, not cool. Sit back, relax in life and have some fun, which is just what they're for after a shitty day at work (and I know all about them!) Jacqui O, just keep enjoying the cookies and someday soon I'll bake you a cake that's worth eating!!
