Winter is the first beneficiary of the controversial MMDA (Marine Mammals with Disabilities Act) of 1977
A two year-old bottlenose dolphin has received an artificial flipper after losing hers in a crab trap out at sea. Winter was only three months-old when she was rescued off the Florida coast by a benevolent fisherman who found her thrashing around in the trap's line. She nearly died of her injuries and exhaustion.
Rumor has it that Winter recently auditioned to be Def Leopard's replacement drummer.
She survived, luckily, but had to have her tail fin amputated, before being placed at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. Apparently without her tail she developed a "swimming style that was a cross between an alligator and a shark," (according to this article), but recently became the recipient of a custom-made artificial flipper from Hanger Prosthetics and Orthotics complete with a silicon sleeve and a titanium joint.

Another dolphin in Japan, named Fuji, has a prosthesis to replace a "part" of her tail, but Winter's injuries are even more extensive. Winter will actually need at least three new tails as she grows over the next fifteen years into her full size.

I have yet to see any video of either of these prosthetics in action but I'll admit that I'm really hopeful. Why shouldn't we apply what we've learned about kinaesthetics and prosthetics in situations like this?
If anything these animals should bring greater awareness to the plight of the wild population. As long as they are being surrounded by sound education, I say, "Go for it."\
There's been some great work done in this area on animals even as large as elephants.

I took my grandson to see this movie today. We really enjoyed the movie. We are looking forward to going to Clearwater, Florida for a visit to see Winter. It was parts in the movie that made my eyes tear up and parts that made me laugh. My grandson even wanted to go on youtube to see winter we did.

I loved Dolphin Tale!!!!!it's amazing I loved all the actors and actors ( girl actors). The movie was sooooooo good I recommend it to all family's, might want to bring the tissue box 😰. I just want a pet dolphin now and name it.....WINTER 🐬. It's a movie for all ages loved it super movie.

Acabamos de ver la película de winter y nos sorprendió enormemente,pues el ser humano pasa por situaciones difíciles durante su vida y nos aferramos a la tristeza y la naturaleza nos da lecciones que no nos esperamos. Tenemos un hijo de 11 años insulinodependiente por su diabetes desde hace 9 años y durante su corta vida ha pasado por momentos muy difíciles pues aunque no le falta ningún miembro de su cuerpo siente que es diferente por depender de un aparato infusor de insulina que tiene pegado al cuerpo y si no hay cambios en la ciencia seguirá de por vida usándolo.
Comento esto porque daniel se indentifica mucho con los delfines y me gustaría saber si hay posibilidades de llevarlo para conocerlo y vea que apesar de que winter es un animal que no razona aunque super inteligentes salió adelate como nosotros sus padres queremos que lo haga.Felicidades por su éxito

A very touching and inspiring story indeed. My 4 year old son can't get enough of it albeit I suspect its for the mere sight of the dolphins.
At hindsight though I wish that many of us will be more eager and determined to help our very own kind who suffered from disabilities especially those from the third-world countries who could barely make for there daily sustenance. I should know because I live among them.

I think winter is an inspiration to everyone across the globe. She shows that no matter what happens to you like if you get hurt just never stop trying.And that just because you are hurt you are never broken you are still very strong and you can always be filled with hope for friends and family members if they are hurt like winter was.

Hola, que experiencia tan triste pero a la vez tan alentadora para algunos humanos que al pasar por una situacion asi o similar se echar a morir. La película y sobre todo el final de ella, nos remueve a la mayoria digo yo, ese deseo de conservacion y el de salvar el planeta a como de lugar. Ya que si el hombre no causara tanto daño al ambiente, a este y otros animales no les pasaria esta clase de accidentes. Me alegra mucho que WINTER este bien y que la protesis le haya funcionado. I just watched the movie last night it was so inspiriring I also want to thank Clearwater museum for taking care of her. She is the cuttist dolphin I have ever seen please take good care of her

Winter is the best. I really don't like the bird that much and how it snaps at you. Sower is really good with Winter. I love the movie so much. It is amazing that she lived and I can not believe that the movie is a true story.I can not say how much I loved that movie thank you Sower and everyone eise that helped save Winter.

We just watched the movie Dolphin Tail it was great and message behind the story line is wonderful too. We need some of our milatary men and women sit down and watch it. We should never give up when we have a disablity because anyone can speak up and so people can and do anything they make up their minds to do. I know as I have been disabled all my life can do something and supprise people all the time. Thank You!

Félicitation! Très émouvant et surtout une très belle leçon de vie pour tous ceux qui ont l'esprit ouvert et qui peuvent comprendre que certains évènements, s'avèrent souvent être un mal pour un bien avec toutes les suites de conséquences pour amener à des solutions...Ce film nous a très bien démontré, qu'il ne faut jamais baisser les bras, mais toujours garder espoir!
La prochaine fois que je descends en Floride, je me dois de visiter Winter, cette mignonne Dolphine, à Clearwater en Floride au Clearwater Marine Aquarium...

I saw the moive its great! ill tell u aabout myself im 8 years old i have a cat named ivy and a dog named britney we named britney after britney spears my mom says shes named after trouble pop star.
