One of the world's few flightless parrots, the Kakapo is endemic to New Zealand and is notable for having parrot sex with this guy's head.

Don't Stick Your Fingers in the Cage
Aardvarks making out

In the wild, Andrew feeds on fish, sponges, small crustaceans, nematode worms and protozoans.

Benny's diet is very specialized, consisting mainly of the interior of Ramy nuts, nectar from the Traveller's Palm tree, some fungi and insect grubs. He is also known to raid coconut plantations, and has been seen eating lychees and mangoes, which are also plantation crops.

It would be an honour to be violated by a Kakapo, and then have Stephen Fry make witty remarks about it!

The original "Last Chance to See" was in book form, written mostly by the late and sorely missed Douglas Adams. I wonder what he would have had to say. As I recall, his Kakapo encounter involved more blood but less total body fluids...

Bjoern, you're assuming quite a bit when you propose that more access to the wider literature will allow reporters to aquaint themselves more broadly within a field. Most often, stories are written on a tight deadline, disallowing exhaustive literature searches. In addition, there is little incentive to dig really deep since although this week's story may be on Ida the fossil, next week's story might be on Zippy the Alzheimer's disease mouse.
