To this science writer, that makes their feat nothing short of amazing.</p> <p>The Golem, by the way, which is preserved in the basement of the Weizmann Institute's mathematics building, was not the first computer at the Institute. The WEIZAC (below) was built at the Institute in the 1950's, at a cost of one fifth of the Institute's budget.</p> <div style="width: 310px;display:block;margin:0 auto;"><a href="/files/weizmann/files/2013/10/weizak15.jpg"><img class="size-medium wp-image-673" alt="WEIZAC" src="http://scienceblogs.com/weizmann/files/2013/10/weizak15-300x225.jpg" width="300" height="225" /></a> WEIZAC </div> </div> <span><a title="View user profile." href="/author/jhalper" lang="" about="/author/jhalper" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">jhalper</a></span> <span>Thu, 10/10/2013 - 02:43</span> <div class="field field--name-field-blog-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-inline"> <div class="field--label">Tags</div> <div class="field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/tag/announcements" hreflang="en">Announcements</a></div> <div class="field--item"><a href="/tag/basic-research" hreflang="en">basic research</a></div> <div class="field--item"><a href="/tag/chemistry-0" hreflang="en">Chemistry</a></div> <div class="field--item"><a href="/tag/computer-science" hreflang="en">Computer Science</a></div> <div class="field--item"><a href="/tag/arieh-warshel" hreflang="en">Arieh Warshel</a></div> <div class="field--item"><a href="/tag/golem-computer" hreflang="en">Golem computer</a></div> <div class="field--item"><a href="/tag/michael-levitt" hreflang="en">Michael Levitt</a></div> <div class="field--item"><a href="/tag/nobel-prize" hreflang="en">Nobel prize</a></div> <div class="field--item"><a href="/tag/basic-research" hreflang="en">basic research</a></div> </div> </div> <section> <article data-comment-user-id="0" id="comment-1909124" class="js-comment comment-wrapper clearfix"> <mark class="hidden" data-comment-timestamp="1381501323"></mark> <div class="well"> <strong></strong> <div class="field field--name-comment-body field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field--item"><p>Did they at least have a card reader?</p> </div> <drupal-render-placeholder callback="comment.lazy_builders:renderLinks" arguments="0=1909124&amp;1=default&amp;2=en&amp;3=" token="VAS5k7Jne-qsRNPQ1pWNc78LIiEuNJFlZqlR2HS8gCo"></drupal-render-placeholder> </div> <footer> <em>By <span lang="" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">AJ (not verified)</span> on 11 Oct 2013 <a href="https://scienceblogs.com/taxonomy/term/20438/feed#comment-1909124">#permalink</a></em> <article typeof="schema:Person" about="/user/0"> <div class="field field--name-user-picture field--type-image field--label-hidden field--item"> <a href="/user/0" hreflang="und"><img src="/files/styles/thumbnail/public/default_images/icon-user.png?itok=yQw_eG_q" width="100" height="100" alt="User Image" typeof="foaf:Image" class="img-responsive" /> </a> </div> </article> </footer> </article> <div class="indented"> <article data-comment-user-id="122" id="comment-1909125" class="js-comment comment-wrapper clearfix"> <mark class="hidden" data-comment-timestamp="1381546097"></mark> <div class="well"> <strong></strong> <div class="field field--name-comment-body field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field--item"><p>I'm pretty sure that by the end of the 1960s they would have been using printouts on "computer paper" -- those long perforated stacks with the holes on the edges.</p> </div> <drupal-render-placeholder callback="comment.lazy_builders:renderLinks" arguments="0=1909125&amp;1=default&amp;2=en&amp;3=" token="u76fiBzFhz6IJRuzdHb4UW7vtI6odO89IQhsXLHfoNE"></drupal-render-placeholder> </div> <footer> <em>By <a title="View user profile." href="/author/jhalper" lang="" about="/author/jhalper" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">jhalper</a> on 11 Oct 2013 <a href="https://scienceblogs.com/taxonomy/term/20438/feed#comment-1909125">#permalink</a></em> <article typeof="schema:Person" about="/author/jhalper"> <div class="field field--name-user-picture field--type-image field--label-hidden field--item"> <a href="/author/jhalper" hreflang="en"><img src="/files/styles/thumbnail/public/default_images/icon-user.png?itok=yQw_eG_q" width="100" height="100" alt="User Image" typeof="foaf:Image" class="img-responsive" /> </a> </div> </article> <p class="visually-hidden">In reply to <a href="/comment/1909124#comment-1909124" class="permalink" rel="bookmark" hreflang="en"></a> by <span lang="" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">AJ (not verified)</span></p> </footer> </article> </div> </section> <ul class="links inline list-inline"><li class="comment-forbidden"><a href="/user/login?destination=/weizmann/2013/10/10/a-computer-for-nobel-prize-winning-work%23comment-form">Log in</a> to post comments</li></ul> Thu, 10 Oct 2013 06:43:39 +0000 jhalper 71250 at https://scienceblogs.com
