Hi Grrl, I may be wrong but aren't these flowers Clematis?
I think Passiflora have the stamens on a "pedestal" not separate like these. Lovely flowers either way, though.

Adrian is right - Clematis, and he only scratches the surface of the differences.

Yes, a clematis rather than a passionflower. I can't do any good with the usual passionflowers because caterpillars of gulf fritillary butterflies consume them. However they do not bother my Adenia fruticosa, which has tiny yellow flowers. Incidentally Adenia is also a genus of killifish, an illustration that the zoological and botanical codes of nomenclature are separate entities.

Always like your flower photos--have 3 clematis plants and they bloom at different seasons; right now, the white one is in bloom, next will be the purple. Incidentally, I used to call it "clemÃ¡tis" but they tell me it's supposed to be pronounced "clÃ©matis" -- any input?

well, i do have many hundreds (perhaps thousands) of flower photos, so i guess i should dig through them and post a few more, then, huh? i also recently got a sweet macro lens for the nikon that does a good job with flower photography, too.

(now, just gotta get a new nikon body since this camera has more limits than i do, photographically speaking).

I have been nursing my own problems in greater loads than ever before, but you coaxed me gently out for a moment with this gracious deliverance of a flower. A moving result is wrought once more through you, the medium, and the camera lens. It is something precious to behold in front of my eyes. It is stirring not just because it is beautiful, but it projects as if it is alive, although it is really a photographic shadow of it. Remarkable job, Grrl!

Here's a silly thing that you might enjoy. When naming this image, I used Google translate to check my Finnish because, well, we all know why. Anyway, I found something weird (you can check this for yourself if you are so ambitious):

If you look at the above table, you will notice that the singular, "daisy", differs dramatically in the Google version between Finnish singular (pÃ¤ivÃ¤nkakkara) and plural (koiranputkea) ... WTF?? I've learned a few languages and none of them had a completely different word for the plural version. Certain I had made a mistake, I spent some time with my nose in not one, but two Finnish-English dictionaries -- and by that, I mean actual books that collect dust on my shelves, not the online versions. This taught me that instead od giving me an actual plural version of the singular, "daisty," Google Translate appears to be bastardizing the English phrase, "pushing up daisies", which is tyÃ¶ntÃ¤Ã¤ koiranputkea in Finnish, which translates as "pushing up cow parsley." So I am being given the Finnish word for parsley as the Finnish plural for daisy, instead of just (correctly?) adding an extra "a" on the end of the singular form of the Finnish for "daisy," which would give me "PÃ¤ivÃ¤nkakkaraa" (daisies).

So not only have I caught Google cheating, but it seems that I have inadvertently discovered that Finns don't "push up daisies" after they die, they instead push up cow parsley. Cow parsley? Anthriscus sylvestris? I've got some photos of this rather unimpressive weed somewhere, but I don't care enough about it to dig through my photo archives to find them.

Of course, this leads me to ask; does cow parsley commonly grow in Finnish graveyards?

I don't know Finnish. Having said that, though, here is some linguistic information. There are plenty of examples of two closely-related words (singular and plural of a noun, different forms of the same verb) which have wildly variant forms. Examples from English include singular person, plural people; present tense go, past tense went. This almost always happens by combining forms that originally belonged to separate words: went, for example, was originally the past tense form of the almost-obsolete verb wend.

Nonetheless: your Finnish data is certainly a translation error on the part of Google. And as Aki points out above, Finnish plurals are finicky and hard to predict for English speakers. Apparently the main issue is that there is a case called partitive, which gets used instead of the "ordinary" plural whenever there is the slightest hint of selecting from among a larger multitude. This probably explains the difference between the two plurals Aki presents, but I don't know which one is partitive.

On another note, however, I look at these Finnish names and wonder, is there a strong northerly wind, perhaps, or nor-easterly, which blows all the vowels out of Poland and they end up landing there?

This is one of the last photographs I snapped in Helsinki -- I chose to spend my last day in Finland on the historical island fortress of Suomenlinna (which is one of my favorite places to go and to photograph). One of my goals is to return to Helsinki and to stay in a hotel on the island of Suomenlinna (preferably in winter) so I can capture the more difficult images that I have in my head. At this time, I am not sure how I will accomplish this (maybe I can be an invited speaker somewhere?), but I am open to your suggestions!

While I was there in late april three years ago, it was fog and cold pulsating steeply with hot virgin blue. The fog (which was pretty thick, actually - you could walk right in the sea if you got distracted for a mere second) did give the islands that sinister touch required for a war fortress. Only sad part was all the graffiti.

(And the Finnish language. I've seen enough umlauts for a lifetime.)

The legendary tourist guide of Suomenlinna, Ior Bock used to tell wild stories about the fortress. Maybe it was his magic pipe which accelerated his thoughts? ;-)
