Bloggity Blog https://scienceblogs.com/ en Program Announcement: I'm Moving https://scienceblogs.com/mikethemadbiologist/2011/09/01/program-announcement-im-moving Program Announcement: I'm Moving

I've dropped some hints in the past that my relationship with ScienceBlogs would be...altered.

Well, I've decided to leave. Mostly, it had to do with the issue of pseudonymity, although I'm very excited to hang out my own shingle once again. I don't want to rehash the issue of pseudonymity, since others have done that quite well, but revealing the Mad Biologist's Top Sekrit identity just wasn't in the cards.

I want to make something clear. ScienceBlogs/NatGeo really did try to keep me. For some crazy reason, they seem to like the writing--I won't get into the details, but that really does seem to be the case. My impression is that they are not trying to 'hollow out' ScienceBlogs (or, at least, they weren't trying to 'hollow out' me). I understand why a corporation like National Geographic wouldn't want to have pseudonymous writers, even though it's not compatible with how I want to play it.

OK, so what comes next? Well, I've opened my new digs at http://mikethemadbiologist.com. I might be crossposting here for a bit to close out some contractual obligations, but that's the new home of the Mad Biologist. And, of course, to find out about the latest doings, you can subscribe to my twitter feed.

Finally, I want to thank the many people who have worked at ScienceBlogs. It all started with Katherine Sharpe who recruited me. I remember my first conversation with her, and when she invited me, I asked her, "Are you sure you want me? You have read my blog, right?" Since that time, no one at ScienceBlogs ever told me what to write, or ruled anything off limits (and, at times, I'm certain it showed...). It was truly a wonderful concept: invite scientists--working scientists trained in data analysis and experimentation--to write about, well, anything and everything. Adam Bly really wasn't far off the mark with the 'science is culture' motto. It was an exciting and innovative thing while it lasted.

I am very grateful for this opportunity.

Anyway, enough of the maudlin stuff. Hopefully, I'll be seeing you around.

mikethemadbiologist Thu, 09/01/2011 - 03:03

Tags

Bloggity Blog

I'm so sorry you are departing, although, of course, it is understandable, given the new parameters. But there has been, I have to admit, an element of comic relief -- of the black-humor variety -- in the spectacle of so many people who have been in denial suddenly waking up and smelling the crazy.

A number of commentators seem shocked at how unreasonable Republicans are being. "Has the G.O.P. gone insane?" they ask.

Why, yes, it has. But this isn't something that just happened, it's the culmination of a process that has been going on for decades. Anyone surprised by the extremism and irresponsibility now on display either hasn't been paying attention, or has been deliberately turning a blind eye.

And may I say to those suddenly agonizing over the mental health of one of our two major parties: People like you bear some responsibility for that party's current state.

Admittedly, this is nothing Comrade Driftglass hasn't been preaching since he started. Still nice to see though.

Anyway, this also gives me an excuse to resurrect one of posts that Blogger EATED:

Mike the Mad Biologist: What Was Richard Cohen Thinking?: Richard Cohen's column is... mind boggling:

But if you told me, as some have been implying, that Bush is a racist or that he doesn't care about black people, I would not only say that you're wrong but add, "Not the George Bush I know." Of course, I don't know George Bush personally. But in his first presidential campaign, I traveled with him and tried, as he might say, to look into his heart. Conveniently enough, he sometimes wears it on his sleeve -- never more so, as I discovered, than when he talks about poor kids and racial and ethnic minorities. His feelings for them -- especially for poor kids -- are genuine. This is what I believed then and this -- his incompetent performance regarding Hurricane Katrina notwithstanding -- is what I believe now....

But Bush is not cut from that cloth. He is a contemporary Republican, a person of another generation who, you may have noticed, has a black woman as secretary of state and had a black man before her. Under him, the GOP began an outreach to black Americans, and unless the Democrats wake up it will ultimately succeed. As Karl Rove well knows, all he has to do is pick up a small percentage of the black vote and he ends the current 50-50 electoral split. Bush, who won an impressive 27 percent of the black vote in his reelection bid for Texas governor, could have been the man to do this.

Sounds pretty reasonable, until you start, erm, thinking. Nevermind the 'some of my best Cabinet members are black' crap, has Cohen forgotten what Bush did to win the Republican primary in South Carolina? For those keeping score at home, Bush and his sociopathic minions smeared John McCain by claiming that McCain's adopted Bangladeshi daughter was his illegitimate black child. Then, of course, Bush also made the mandatory Republican pit stop at segregationist Bob Jones University. I would be really interested in hearing a defense of race baiting in the pursuit of political power.

[crickets...silence...sun rises...sun sets]

There is none. The only reason Bush has not used race baiting is because he hasn't had to. Until Katrina, Bush could play the "if you're against repeal of the estate tax, you're for the terrorists" card. Rest assured, if it's politically expedient, he will play the race card.... It's not as if it would be out of character for him. On the Etiquette of Internet Citations

I'm a big fan of Brad DeLong's blog even when I don't agree with him. But one of the things that's bothered me is when he reprints posts in full. For bloggers, professional or amateur, links are currency. Reprinting the post in full means people won't be inclined to click through to your site. When asked about this, DeLong had an interesting answer:

The answer is simple: Linkrot.

Go, say, to a webpage of mine from the first half of the 2000s at random... Let's pick one: http://www.j-bradford-delong.net/movable_type/2003_archives/001202.html.

See how many of the links I include lead to "404 not found."

In this case, it is both of them. Both http://www.dynamist.com/scene/may20.html and http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/march0303.html are now dead.

Would you bet that the Washington Post will keep Ezra's posts up and freely available in a decade? Or even five years?

If I want things I write to be readable in a decade, I need to quote extensively now.

So I went through some of my 2006 posts. Of the links that didn't link to my blog, about twenty percent were dead. So DeLong has a point. On the other hand, I've always argued that the best way to gain more readers is to convince widely-read bloggers to give you good links, so I'm not sure what to make of DeLong's policy.

I'm not in it for the money (in a really good month I cover my cell phone and internet connection, and maybe have a pizza thrown in). But for other bloggers, it really does matter. Hell, even if you're an amateur, you still want traffic at your site.

Anyway, discuss.

mikethemadbiologist Tue, 03/29/2011 - 05:57

Tags

Bloggity Blog

Use technology! Under the dead tree publishing paradigm, he can simply refer to his source and have a high degree of confidence that the source will be available should the scholar wish to track it down. But he has already observed that under the online paradigm there is no guarantee that the material he is referencing will still be accessible. This is part of what the people warning of a digital dark age are complaining about.

Balanced against that is the fair use issue. Quoting an excerpt for noncommercial purposes is usually considered fair use. Quoting an entire article is generally not. BdL generally does provide the link to the primary source, which include links to other sources (these second-order links, at least under Typepad as Brad has it configured, generally do not carry over; Brad normally quotes that other source as well if he feels it is important enough to the argument). These were very rational people, and there were a lot of them. Some long-term readers whom I knew to be quite sober in their thinking. The fear that they were expressing was somewhat pervasive. That, to me, was extraordinarily striking: that these were American citizens who were afraid to donate money to a group whose political aims they supported; who had never been charged with, let alone convicted of any crime who felt like they were going to end up on some kind of government list, or possibly be charged with aiding and abetting or giving material support to terrorism.

In light of that, comes this chilling tale of targeting University of Wisconsin professor William Cronon who publicly opposed Republican governor Scott Walker:

Earlier this week, Cronon published an Op ed piece in The New York Times that contained a scathing attack on Walker and the Wisconsin GOP, alleging that their anti-union proposal represents a radical break from Wisconsin history. Cronon also posted a blog entry that alleged that a little-known conservative outfit called the American Legislative Exchange Council, which tries to engineer right-wing policies in state legislatures, is behind the Wisconsin anti-union push.
Shortly thereafter, Cronon says, the University of Wisconsin's attorneys received a request from the Wisconsin GOP, under the state open records law, for copies of a huge amount of Cronon's emails sent from his state account at the university. That request is posted right here. Tellingly, the Wisconsin GOP asked for Cronon-authored emails that contain a range of union-related keywords, such as "AFSCME," "collective bargaining," "recall," etc....

Cronon theorizes, based on the keyword requests, that Wisconsin Republicans are trying to catch him in violation of state university rules by using a state email account to engage in "lobbying and electioneering to try to unseat these Repubican legislators." In other words, he says, Wisconsin Republicans want to damage him professionally in response to his criticism of them.

"That's what they're hoping to find," Cronon says. "They're trying to intimidate me. What they're saying is that if an academic raises these kinds of questions, we're going to make his life really uncomfortable. Intimidating people from asking legitimate questions is a McCarthyite tactic."

Movement conservatives, since the days of Donald Segretti and the other 'rat-fuckers', have always done this. They don't reconsider or rethink, they regroup and rearm. Their only rule is that there are no rules. They get away with these scorched earth politics, in part, because we present ourselves as targets. Pseudonymity is a way to speak your peace, and not be retaliated against.

Just something to consider, especially if your career--and livelihood too--is dependent on federal funding.

Case in point: The Republicans are now claiming they're being intimidated.

Troll-be-gone: This isn't about being called names (if you can't handle that, then the open bloggysphere probably isn't for you). If preventing a state-employed political appointee from running a PAC or a re-election campaign out of his state-paid-for computer and office means professors effectively can't use their university supplied email addresses to coordinate with labor leaders about political tactics, I think I'm OK with that.

While this is certainly intimidation, it isn't McCarthyism - unless you think McCarthy was somehow in favor of government transparency.

<drupal-render-placeholder callback="comment.lazy_builders:renderLinks" arguments="0=2147322&1=default&2=en&3=" token="Li-wMu05LAAsDg3gZOeXz-yCtuG7VVLN3m4SyK9fJhs"></drupal-render-placeholder>

By hibob (not verified) on 26 Mar 2011 #permalink

As Cronon has pointed out, any student e-mail containing (say) the word "Republican" would be subject to this request. The paper, when released, had compromising methodological problems (for good coverage, read here, here, and here; and snark). At the time Wolfe-Simon and her colleagues were upset at the treatment the paper received on the internet, and initially refused to respond in any forum other than published journals (this policy didn't seem to stop her from giving a TED talk without any forum for critical feedback. Kinda hypocritical).

Zen Faulkes has two very good posts on a Bioessays review (not by Wolfe-Simon) about the subject, but what struck me was this (italics mine):

As part of our response to Dr. Redfield, we also take this opportunity to offer a general comment on the use of the Internet to "review" the technical literature. To be perfectly clear, to the extent that we are familiar with those who offered signed comments regarding the particular case of the Wolfe-Simon et al. paper, we do not in any way question their scientific expertise. Signed comments should be applauded and indeed offer a measure of authenticity, but nevertheless these "chat room" environments are not constrained or screened and at times become ad hominem attacks, which have no place in the scientific literature. And, further, such communications do not, themselves, offer specific citations to support their position. If they are to be viewed as authoritative and do not simply reflect general knowledge, then they too should at least refer to important, foundational papers that support their view. In general and not in reference to the case of the Wolfe-Simon et al. paper, until there is a process in place to screen and edit such commentary (such as here for our current scientific exchange with Dr. Redfield), there remains a credibility issue. We are all aware of the massive misinformation that pervades the Internet and that is why so many simply choose to ignore it rather than track it as part of their efforts to stay informed of the scientific literature pertinent to their research. Because of such accuracy issues, at present and in its current structure, organization and process, the term "authoritative blogs" far too often represents an oxymoron.

We'll leave aside that much of the commentary by bloggers wasn't anonymous (although some of it was pseudonymous). And we'll leave aside the issue that most of these criticisms were written as if they were solicited reviews of the article--which typically aren't laden with citations either.

What mindboggling is that these reviewers have no idea that there is a different between an authored blogpost and comments left on a blog. They're right in that the validity of a statement left by "Big Schlong 69" in the comments section might be questionable. But if someone writes a detailed post, as Rosie Redfield did, with substantial criticisms, that is different in kind from an anonymous statement in the comments. But comments show up, often unsigned. That's just part of the form. Hell, it's hard enough to keep spam out of the comments section. But it doesn't reflect on what the blogger wrote--in fact, some bloggers like John Hawks don't even have comments. Comments are separate from the post--which can be well written and have scientific merit and a track record of other posts.

Utterly clueless about the intertoobz.

mikethemadbiologist Tue, 03/22/2011 - 06:57

Tags

Bloggity Blog

Utterly clueless about the intertoobz.
You forgot to close an i tag.

:-)

<drupal-render-placeholder callback="comment.lazy_builders:renderLinks" arguments="0=2147225&1=default&2=en&3=" token="44SvsMqsVIteSAXBopeIpQ-_M_BzSlmuVUHKEfxt458"></drupal-render-placeholder>

By Bob O'H (not verified) on 22 Mar 2011 #permalink

Oh great.
