I heart Cincinnati

I'm at the NIDA Blending Conference at the Duke Energy Center in Cincinnati for two days. Honestly, when I heard I'd be coming to Cincinnati for this meeting, I wasn't optimistic, and when I realized I'd be only 20 miles from the infamous Creation Museum, I was horrified. But it turns out that Cincinnati - at least downtown Cincinnati - is charming, especially on a sunny June day. After obtaining delicious, much-hyped Graeter's ice cream (try the tangerine!) at Fountain Square, I headed over to the Contemporary Arts Center (which is free Mondays after 5pm) and checked out the interactive karaoke bar installation by Joel Armor. Yes, that's what I said - there's a diner-style karaoke setup and cash bar every Monday night until August. Who could fail to be charmed by this place?

I have a few more photos from Cincinnati, but since I didn't bring my charger for my phone, and it's almost dead, I'll have to post those later. . . in the meantime, this photo of the stunning ceiling of the Energy Center Ballroom will have to do. Great job, architects!

According to Lewis Black's hypothesis of the cause of cerebral aneurysms, when someone hears something incredibly stupid or irrational (i.e. "If it weren't for my horse, I wouldn't have spent that year in college.") the mind fixates upon it, becoming more and more stressed until a cerebral aneurysm…
After the trip to my parents' for Christmas, I flew down to Charleston, SC to attend the Renaissance Weekend (though none of it fell on an actual weekend day...). This provided some much-needed stress relief, but was not great in photo-a-day terms, as it's a strictly off the record event, so I…
I didn't take the DSLR to March Meeting with me, but I did throw a point-and-shoot in my bag. A few of these are still just cell-phone snapshots, because I didn't have the bag with me all the time. 193/366: Stadium View When I checked into the hotel, they told me I had a "stadium view" room on the…

What kind of traveler are you? Any time I travel my chargers, transfer cords, etc. all get packed in the backpack with my laptop.

Causes a few funny looks when they x-ray the bag but then it just goes right through. They don't even ask me to turn on the machine.

Thanks for the rebuke, Tony P. ;) Actually I am only traveling for 3.5 days, so I shouldn't have needed to charge the phone - but I wasn't anticipating the 2+ hour conversation I had Sunday night, which used 60% of the battery.

This is the first time I've traveled with the iphone, and I must say its battery has a much briefer life than that of my previous Nokia. I did intend to bring the cord, but usually for such a short trip, a cord wouldn't be necessary, so it was low on my priority list. But now I'm finding it quite refreshing to be cell-phone-less for a day - it's like being back in 2003! And I still have the laptop. So no hardship. :)

Not far from the downtown area are several wonderful museums -- in and around Eden Park -- the Cincinnati Museum of Art, the Natural History Museum, and Krohn Conservatory. These are worth going to Cincinnati for even if you don't have a convention to attend. Also the zoo is excellent.

"I realized I'd be only 20 miles from the infamous Creation Museum, I was horrified." There is much more to that area of Kentucky than just that embarrassment . . . Just down the road is Big Bone Lick State Park (the "birthplace of American paleontology"). And if that isn't enough, Big Bone Lick is right down the road from Beaver Lick . . . which is right down the road from Sugartit.
