The 33rd Meeting of the Skeptics' Circle has been posted at Science and Politics. Bora has kindly provided an abstract: Complaints like "hurts my brain" and "blows my mind" as a result of exposure to incredible stories have recently been definitively tied to the neuronal cell death (apoptosis).…

I just have time for a short take today. (If you need more, fortunately, Bora has posted the 33rd Meeting of the Skeptics' Circle for your edification. Hi Tim,

Just a quick note to let you know that Iraq Body Count have published a critique of some comments you made on the Lancet mortality study.

Penny for your thoughts?

Cheers.

>Penny for your thoughts?

They got a lot wrong on just that page. I stand by my 33,000 number -- they got a higher number by including 2 violent deaths of unknown origin as war related. I'll put together a post when I have time.

Thanks Tim, and sorry for raising this on an unrelated thread.

You might be interested to know that the IBC document linked above was a response to criticisms of their work by Medialens, and others, and has now been picked up by BBC's Newsnight. They have a lengthy interview with IBC co-founder John Sloboda, including his criticisms of the Lancet study, along with responses from Medialens and journalist John Pilger.

I should add that I broadly share Medialens' critique of IBC's method and presentation, and am deeply shocked that Mr Sloboda should allude to Fred Kaplan's incorrect view, claiming the Lancet's method is viewed by some critics as "like a drunk throwing a dart at a dartboard".
